To me the first season is up there with things like Breaking Bad, Mad Men, etc.

Are whatever troubles they had with HBO that led to the truncated and rushed season 2 the only thing that kept it from the very top levels?

Yes, could have been the GOAT with a full 4 or 5 seasons.

I pretty much agree. Though I think not having one clear protaganist might have held it back a bit. Even characters like Walter White And Tony Soprano, while not necessarily "good guys", certainly were the main characters. In Rome, Pullo and Vorenus kind of shared the role.

I love season 1.

Even though they merged 2 & 3 I really don't think I would have liked any of the plots even fleshed out.

Season 1 was fun. It was like an old Bing & Bob road movie. Well, a road movie with plenty of sex and gore.

The entire plot of 2 was too much misery and none of the Vorenus & Pullo road show.

Absolutely. It was well casted and well written. You could absolutely tell they had to rush it to close it out.

They had actually talked about a Rome film but the whole elaborate Italian set burned to the ground in 2008.

Yep. Showtime, Cinemax, Starz, and AMC are all kicking their arse other than GOT.
