Question on the Imperial Senate (Star Wars)

Has this ever been explored? If Palpatine was granted emergency powers, what purpose does the senate serve? Why was the Empire so afraid of the Senate finding out about the deathstar?
If they were so easily dissolved in the opening minutes of Episode IV, I can't imagine they held any real power.

They have control of the Fleet of the Empire.
Which wouldve been able to stop Palpatine.
shite, just the few ships Akbar steals is enough to fight them. Just Imagine 100+ more cruisers and destroyers on the Rebel side.

Where is this mentioned, and why wouldn't Palpatine basically be like, "ok well, you no longer have control of the fleet?"

Although once declared Emperor, Palpatine technically had complete control of the galaxy, in reality that control was tenuous and based on his ability to effectively respond to the Separatist threat (remember, the Republic was already fractured when he took it over). If he tried to wield too much power too quickly, the Senate could have tried to repeal his emergency powers, which would have resulted in a messy situation for him at best. It was only once the Death Star was complete, and the Empire had demonstrated the ability to completely destroy any planet which resisted them, that he could throw off the final trappings of the Republic.

I always assumed it functioned like the Roman Senate under Augustus.
The Senate handled administrative affairs that didn't require military intervention. They were also allowed to consult on new laws, but the Emperor had the final say.
The senators would also be the primary contact for the regional governors. Palpatine tells the Senate what needs to be done, the Senators then direct the governors. And coming the other way, if there is an issue in a system, the governor contacts the senator who can then bring it to the Emperor.

The Senate wielded a lot of power still, but imagine the US Senate if there were, like, 5-6 factions. No one group had enough power to solidify a base.
If Palpatine had gone forward with too much too fast, the systems would have colluded and stripped him of his power.
Once the Separatists were defeated, the Jedi attempt at his arrest gave him a second enemy to focus on, letting him keep his power.
It's a bit of a warning - don't let fear lead to giving one person too much power.

Didn't happen with Obama. Might happen with Trump

Not once Trump completes the Death Star.

Good comparison. I was going to mention Rome as well.
Ask Caesar how not working with the Senate after taking control went for him

Empire did nothing wrong. The depicted conflict between Palpatine and the Senate was fabricated propaganda by the rebel terrorists to try to sow the seeds of instability in the illustrious Empire.
Also, Alderaan fired first.

The Senate was an illusion of democracy. Without it, most of the Galaxy would rebel. With the Death Star, Palpatine could Just destroy rebellious planets. Once the Death Star was destroyed, the destruction of the Empire as the Galaxy knew it was inevitable. The Imperial fleet got stretched too thin.

Did Dooku know the whole time his master was leader of the senate?
Posted on 2/20/17 at 6:37 pm to LSUGlory16
Absolutely.
In fact, I would assume that Palpatine instructed Dooku to create the Separatists because he was the Chancellor. Dooku did almost all of Palpatine's dirty work offscreen so that people didn't suspect him.
He even said in the Attack of the Clones to Obi Wan, "What if I told you that the Republic was now under the control of a dark lord of the Sith? The Dark Side has clouded their vision. Hundreds of senators are now under the influence of a Sith lord called Darth Sidious."
