The entire movie Johnny bullies and beats up on Daniel with no mercy. Seems he doesn't give a shite about hurting him at all. Then in the tournament when his sensei says "Sweep the leg" he acts horrified. Why was it such a big deal to "sweep the leg" on someone that he hated?

Johnny in fact did not want to put Daniel in a body bag therefore ruining his chances of a Karate scholarship to Cal St. Fullerton.

He was insulted at the idea he had to cheat to beat Daniel.

In the semifinal he had one of his guys purposely DQ to hurt him so he wouldn't go to the final. Johnny seen that for the dick move it was.

Also being a douche to Daniel in private is one thing but sweeping the leg in a public place made him look bad.

Does he?

Daniel shows up as the new kid trying to "White Knight" for a girl who had caught his eye and sucker punches Johnny in the beak. Beat down ensues.

Then he gets Johnny with his little water prank at the dance and beat down ensues.

Johnny even told him:
quote:

"you couldn't leave well enough alone could you, you little twerp. You had to push it. Now you're going to pay."

This is the way I saw it. He wanted to beat him fair and square in the tournament.

Solid post. I've often felt I was the only one that thought Daniel was kind of a dick.

Oh I agree. Daniel was a douche who brought it all on himself.

I know how you feel.

I wonder what Myagi's response would have been if Daniel had told him the whole story the night Myagi "saved" him?

I'm sorry about this being from HIMYM, but it's appropriate.

You got no balance in life kid. Better learn balance. Balance is key. Balance good, karate good. Everything good. Balance bad, better pack up, go home. Understand?

I feel like this needs to be bumped. Daniel deserved every single thing that happened to him in that movie, except for the trophy. John should have been the actual winner of the tournament. It was bullshite:
quote:

John Lawrence should actually be the champion. Speaking of the above point…did anyone at the tournament actually bother to check Daniel’s background? Clearly he isn’t really a black belt, so clearly he was not qualified to fight in the tournament, thus negating his wins and the trophy should then go to the runner up, which was John.

A punch to the face is illegal but a kick isn’t? What kind of bullshite rule is that? In the final fight, Daniel scores the first two points. Then Johnny scores the next two. Then, John gets a clean punch to the face of Daniel, but that's not a point. Keep in mind that a punch to the back of the head is a point, as evidenced by Daniel's Second point scored...so punches to the head ARE allowed. Also, immediately after John scores his second point, we see Daniel attempting to punch John in the face...here it is from multiple angles:

So either Daniel was intentionally trying to punch him to be a dick (if it is against the rules), or John was fricked by not getting a point for punching Daniel in the face. It can't be both.

If he told him the truth, I figured it would have been: "What hell wrong with you? You stupid? Stop poking bear and bear not eat you."

He even says "no. I can beat him" or something like that. Daniel did push it, but Johnny et al constantly harassed him. I think the apology from the kid who injured him and Johnny's shock were due to the fact that they were basically clean cut kids who were dicks, but they still had enough class to realize how dirty that was.

Let's just pretend that Johnny and his group of thugs didn't cause Daniel to get into a horrific bike accident, that was brought on by nothing.

And Johnny was drugging at the dance. He got off easy. Daniel could have told on him, and ruined his life forever.

bullshite

So, Daniel played a little prank, and Johnny got a little wet..... BFD

Johnny got off easy. He was drugging on school grounds. He should have been expelled, and sent to prison.

I've always felt that they did frick up the scoring, but frick the "he wasn't a black belt" nonsense.
