Let me preface by saying I'm not an obsessive Star Wars fan. I liked the movies and that's about as far as my fandom goes.

But from what I recall, Luke spent a long time learning how to use the force. He had a lot of trouble at first. He couldn't even move small objects.

Rey was just some girl fending for herself at the beginning of the movie, and then by the end of the movie, which seemed like a very short period of time, Rey holds her own and beats Kylo Ren in a light saber battle? How does that add up?

Not 30 minutes before in the movie Kylo Ren uses the force to completely freeze her and control her and carry her on his ship. She couldn't even move. And then just 30 minutes later she's more powerful than him?

This doesn't make sense to me. Now, like I said, I'm not a huge Star Wars buff.. so maybe it's something I'm missing. I was just confused when watching the movie as to how she became so powerful in what seemingly was a few afternoons without anyone like Yoda even explaining how to use the force. She just did it on her own. I don't get it.

This is explained by how she beat the hell out of people with her staff and Kylo Ren being shot by the wookie.

And the orange lady at the bar telling her she was powerful with the force combined with her ability to resist Ren in the interrogation showed she was naturally gifted with the force.

I think we're all expecting to learn that she was part of Luke's academy before Klyo started killing everyone. Her memory was then subsequently wiped and she was ditched on Jakku. She also talks about how she doesn't know how she knows how to fly so well. What you saw was things coming back to her after she touched Anakin's 2nd lightsaber, which triggered the flashback.

Luke was able to pull his lightsaber at the beginning of Empire Strikes Back with barely any training with Obi Wan.

A popular theory is just that she's had some training when she was very young and had her mind wiped. Add that to the probability that she's Luke's daughter, it's not a stretch for her to do the things she did.

Kylo took a blaster to the stomach right before that and he was still mostly toying with her.

She knew how to fight with the staff so fighting with the saber isn't a huge leap and Ren was pretty beat up when he was fighting her.

Not to mention in that 30 minutes, she goes from being terrified of being called by the light saber/Force, to being somewhat "taught" by Kylo Ren's own actions to how to harness some of its powers. There is also some speculation that, before being dumped on Jakku, she had started initial training.

I think a large part of the difference is Rey grew up knowing about the force and hearing the stories, So she knew some of the things Luke/ Obi Wan / Vader could do like moving things, Jedi Mind Trick...

Luke didn't know squat. He had to be spoon fed all of it by Yoda.

The other difference is, Rey's natural aptitude demonstrates that if the force was strong with Luke, its on steroids with her.

Just my 2 cents

One thing that I don't understand is how Luke's new order failed? Especially because it seems like Kylo is a shitty Jedi/Sith/whatever.

Kylo had been injured. Rey was not a buffoon when it came to hand to hand combat. Clearly she was a strong independent woman.

Maz made Rey aware of the force and the potential it had within her. When Kylo was interrogating her she began resisting and realized she had that power and very quickly began learning how to use it. She had forgotten about the force when they began dueling and Kylo hurt himself by reminding her of the force.

I thought it was really well done, the awakening within her. Before her awakening Kylo help the majority of force power in the universe. I think this explains how powerful he was. But as Rey grew stronger he grew weaker.

I also like how they mention Kylo's battle with the light side and being drawn to it. THis is the first we've seen a dark side character being drawn to the light. Its always the other way around.

So y'all think it is part of the story to leave some mystery for now as to why she's progressed so quickly?

Something that will be explained in episode VIII?

I just thought it was kind of crazy that Luke was supposed to be "very strong" with the force but even he had difficulty learning. It took him years I thought. And she just picks it up in an afternoon. Just thought it was odd.

Luke just chose not to go forward with it after Kylo + knights of ren killed everyone (except Rey?) while Luke was away.

I also think that she was able to do things faster because after her initial running way from the saber, she accepted the force much faster than Luke did.. He was always questioning things and even said "I don't believe it" when Yoda lifted the xwing from the water.

He did, however, use the force to make a "one in a million" shot with no targeting computer to blow up the Death Star.

Rey showed she was a competent combatant earlier in the movie just like it was alluded that Luke was a competent pilot before the Death Star attack in "A New Hope." I don't think it's that much different.

People need to stop overthinking it. I mean, if I think about it, it's pretty lame that the main character of 4-6 goes into hiding because his spoiled brat nephew has temper tantrums. But if they showed Luke kicking Kylo's arse, we wouldn't get 7-9 and the kids of Disney execs would have to go to public school.
