Quantum Leap question

This is one of my all time favorite shows. Here's a question I haven't seen asked. In the series finale, Sam makes a final leap to tell Beth that Al is still alive, and he is coming home.
Beth never remarried, and instead waited for Al to return. Al and Beth had 4 daughters, and were married over 39 years.
Here's the question. Since Al and Beth wound up together, then Al and Sam would have never met to start project Quantum Leap. If Quantum Leap never existed, because Al and Sam never created it, what happened to Sam after that leap?

I think they went along the line of, even though you change one thing in the future, that doesn't mean that the end result isn't still the same.

I think that is a good question, but I think the Quantum Leap project still works bc it is Sam project. Al was a military person assigned to oversee the project and report on its results. It would have been someone else as his observer. Also in the beginning Sam was not married but after he met Teri Hatcher's character and changed her past they apparently married and she was involved in the project. Sam did not know this and she told Al to let him not know. That's just my opinion. Wish they would reboot and have Sam's child go search for his dad and pick up where Sam left off.

Sam didn't need Al to create Quantum Leap.

BTW, Sam leaping into Lee Harvey Oswald is one of my favorite WTF moments in TV history.
Best "oh boy" ever.

Then why didn't Sam return home? Al never being involved in the project had to effect Sam's destiny.

I was always more of a Sliders fan. At least until it went kind of bonkers towards the end.

Voyagers! was my favorite show ever.

There were so many great episodes. Sam deserved better than the fate he was dealt. My heart sank when the last words of the episode flashed on the screen:
"Dr. Sam Beckett never retuned home."

Why does that mean Sam has to return home?
I haven't watched it in 20 years, but just from this thread and reading a summery, if the premise is that Sam goes back and prevents Al from getting involved, then everything after that changes. So, Sam still creates Quantum Leap, but never lands in that bar with MacGyver's friend offering him a path home. So, Sam is still leaping around, but somewhere else. Which basically negates everything that happened during the entire series.

While it was implied that Al helped get the funding from Congress, he didn't have anything to do with the creation of the project itself.
Plus, while I don't think it was the intent at the time (though it may have been), several of Sam's leaps throughout the show changed history to where Al was kind of superfluous.

I was a kid when this show was on, but the Lee Harvey episode stayed with me. Did he leap into any other famous people in history?
I need to find time to binge this show.

It got pretty hilariously good towards the end, with the Cromags chasing them around.

He was Elvis. He was also Marilyn Monroe's bodyguard. He had a MAJOR influence in a very young Stephen King too. That's a few off the top of my head.

Leaped into Elvis, Dr. Ruth (seriously) and the Secret Service guy who jumped on the back of Kennedy's limo.

Man I loved that show. Binged it for a few weeks last summer. When Sam leaped back home as a kid was some great TV.
