When Vincent and Jules went into that apartment, they killed everyone except Marvin. Was Marvin helping out Vince and Jules and turning on his friends? This is all before his untimely departure of course.

It just appeared they set it up so that Marvin may have tipped them off as to where they were for a payoff. Not sure though.

-Marvin turned on his friends.
-Marvin got his head blown off.
-Marvin's body will never be recovered.

Never turn on your friends.

It seems that Marvin wasn't trying to frick Marsellus Wallace like a bitch.

I thought that was obvious.

JULES: We should have shotguns for this kind of deal.

VINCENT: How many up there?

JULES: Three or four.

VINCENT: Counting our guy?

JULES: I'm not sure.

VINCENT: So there could be five guys up there?

JULES: It's possible.

VINCENT: We should have frickin' shotguns.

So the intel was coming from Marvin, but it wasn't clear (and that was almost fatal - hand cannon was unaccounted for - they knew it was going to be between 3 and 5 guys, counting "their" guy, Marvin.)

But, not just intel, Marvin had a specified time to open the door:

JULES: What time is it?

VINCENT: (checking his watch) Seven-twenty-two in the morning.

JULES: It ain't quite time, let's hang back.

So, the implication is quite clear - Marvin is going to unlock the door at 0730.

Vincent asks him if it slipped his mind to tell them a guy was in the bathroom with a damn hand cannon.

But, this was not an act of moral turpitude on Marvin's part - he was turning away from the forces of evil (Brett and his minions are implicitly working for evil - they are demonic) and helping the forces of good (Jules and Vincent.)

It is Vincent's carelessness that gets Marvin killed, almost gets Mia killed and gets himself killed at the end.

hand cannon.

And speaking of whom, "hand cannon" is another acting Arquette, as a kid appeared in an early MTV favorite, "She's a Beauty" by The Tubes, and is now a woman.

The more you know, right?

Vincent is killed because he decided to stick with evil and not take the path of righteousness like Jules.

I agree. But, Vincent's carelessness is a recurring theme and the catalyst for his death (which is a form of justice as he both carelessly killed Marvin and mistreated Butch for no good reason. If he hadn't been such a dick to Butch, he might have been spared, for example.)

you have an amazing memory if you pulled that from movie memory. Damn, I remember that exchange now.

What was in the briefcase? That's the million dollar question.

The Oscar that Quentin Tarantino hopes to win
A human head
The ear from Reservoir Dogs
O.J.'s other glove
Michael Jackson's other glove
The diamonds from the robbery in Reservoir Dogs
Rudolph's nose???

Yeah, it's very possible that Marvin and Hand Cannon were going to do a double frick and take off after everyone was dead. This would make it poetic justice that Marvin was accidentally killed.

Possible, but I don't think likely. Marvin would have armed himself and both he and hand cannon seemed woefully unprepared to deal with Vincent and Jules.

Its funny to see people call him Hand Cannon. I've always called him Jerry Seinfeld.

I remembered the exchange fairly well (I've seen Pulp Fiction at least 20, 25 times. I once watched the movie twice in one day.) But, I pulled the script up to make sure I quoted accurately.

It's a classic McGuffin. The best overall answer is that it is Marcellus' soul. His recovery of this allowed him to be human and let Butch go at the appropriate time.

It was originally intended to be the diamonds from the Reservoir Dogs heist. Keep in mind that Michael Madsen's character in that film (Mr. Blonde) is Vic Vega, Vincent's brother. But, Tarantino decided to go with an undefined McGuffin plot device because it would make for a better movie (and it did.)

This movie is all about second chances/redemption:

Mia ODs and gets a second chance.

Vincent is back from Europe and gets a second chance.

Jules (and Vincent) is saved by divine intervention and he his able to blaze a new trail for himself.

Marcellus gets a second chance after the rape.

Butch gets a second chance after a near fatal encounter with Marcellus, then Maynard and Zed.
