Psych-- Pilot vs. Current Show

I always wonder how the show would've developed if it had stuck with its original stuff from the pilot. The one thing that gets me thinking the most is Shawn's relationship with his dad. The pilot made it seem really different from the warm and fuzzy thing they have going on now where his dad always teaches him a lesson and ties it back to something from Shawn's childhood. Don't get me wrong, it definitely made Shawn's dad funnier, but I'm not sure it made their relationship more interesting.
Obviously I think we can all agree that adding the beautiful Maggie Lawson in place of Lassie's semi-bangable side-chick was a HE-UUGE upgrade. But was the element of having Lassie's partner be a beautiful girl who would play the "will-they/won't they" game with Shawn the original plan or was Shawn originally supposed to be this womanizing slacker who's love life resembled Stiffler's more than Tony Micelli's?
I'm sure we can all also agree that having Chief Vick go from cranky pregnant bitch to total MILF was a definite plus, although that was probably gonna happen no matter what as I doubt they were gonna have her be perpetually pregnant like Bonnie Swanson from Family Guy.
Anybody else wonder about the other differences between what the show was initially supposed to be versus what it became? No spoilers past season 4 please. I got the idea to watch the show on Netflix from this board and it has quickly become one of my favorite shows ever.

I think the relationship with Shawn and Henry changing was a character growth kind of thing more than a change in direction of the show. Even in the first episode, Henry had a newspaper clipping of Shawn solving his first case. The warm and fuzziness came from the respect they developed for each other.
I think him changing from a womanizer was a change in direction. I think the show would definitely have a different feel to it.

I think his character still had womanizing tendencies up until season 5. I think what affected that more than anything is that Shaun and Julliett started dating seriously irl around seasons 1/2

quote:I could kinda see that in the present-day parts of the show, but Henry seems totally different in the flashbacks too. In the current show, he's the stern but loving and attentive father who's just narrow minded. The pilot made him seem totally overbearing and out of touch. And the present day change literally was totally different from the pilot to the 2nd episode. I could see if the change happened gradually, but he was totally different.

It reminds me of what the network did with Captain Mal on Firefly. He was a much darker character/leader in the pilot but the network made him warm and fuzzy for the show. When they made Serenity he was back to the darker version in the pilot.

I actually just watched the pilot on Netflix the other day and thought about this. I think everything you said is pretty spot on. Though I do think that Shawn and his dad's relationship getting better had to do with the fact that actually got a real job and began to listen to his dad and use what he taught him.

I agree with what everyone has said about the change in the relationship between Henry and Shawn having a direct link to their individual character boat. Remember in the pilot they had become so distant from each other. Shawn was off at his jobs at Club Med, theme parks, etc and didn't even know his dad was back in St. Barbara when he returned. And I don't think the vision really get that more "fuzzy", I mean what kid wants to learn how to break out of a car trunk or how many hats are in the room even if it does come in handy later in life.
I was actually thinking about other changes that have occurred that imo are for the better.
Maggie Lawson is a big upgrade but I'm also glad they got rid of the very superstitous police officer. I understand that, as far as the story goes, she helped everyone buy Shawn's psychic act but she annoyed me and glad she was written off the show before the end of the first season.
Can't wait for season 6. Starts Oct. 12
