Ending of RotS - The video starts at 2:25, transition from Leia to Luke. The hand gesture is right at the 3:00 mark. It's okay to admit that you missed what was going on in that scene. It's subtle, it's quick, it came at the end of a two hour and twenty minute movie, and they didn't explicitly say anything about it. It's also a different hand gesture than the Jedi mind trick in Star Wars or in RotJ.

So...you don't think this was Ewan McGregor channeling/mimicking Alec Guinness' portrayal of the character?

Doesn't he do that throughout other parts of the prequels as well? Like earlier in that movie before he decides to jump down to fight Grievous? Must have been mind-tricking those droids!

I guess Obi Wan was minding-tricking Luke the whole during the initial story time in the hut in "A New Hope"? Because Kenobi is playing with his beard/has his hand near his mouth as he is deep in thought for the "tale" he has chosen to tell at the moment.

Well, actually your father was a Jedi but he had some problems. Once, he actually slaughtered a Tusken Raider village (probably should have looked into that more). Then he turned evil and he murdered everyone at the Jedi Temple, including the children, and then went to murder the Separatist leadership (who were puppets for the Emperor).

I'd add:

quote:

Oh, and by the way, here's the lightsaber he murdered all those people with. I picked this up off the ground as he burned rather than giving him a quick, merciful death. You want it?

I don't understand how anyone that grew up with only the OT can take anything Obi Wan says in ANH as truth.

...and then subsequently use those lies as proof of non continuity.

BEN: "That's what your uncle told you. He didn't hold with your father's ideals. Thought he should have stayed here and not gotten involved."

Is Ben referring to the time in Episode II when Anakin and Padme went to Tattoine to find Anakin's mother, and then left soon after? There was no indication here that Owen, who barely knew Anakin at that point, cared about his leaving Tattoine.

We have to assume that this conversation happened off-screen. Maybe by telephone or whatever the Star Wars Universe called their communication system.

And, this quote of Obi-wan's is ambiguous as well:

BEN: "I have something here for you. Your father wanted you to have this when you were old enough, but your uncle wouldn't allow it. He feared you might follow old Obi-Wan on some damned-fool idealistic crusade like your father did."

Ben is just lying about this part to make Luke feel better and hopeful. Ben needs Luke to believe in The Force. There is a good possibility that Luke's light saber was never even owned by Anakin.
