Predator 2 is very Underrated

Yeah it's not as good as the original. But what movie is? Once Arnold opted out of doing the sequel, Predator 2 does the smart thing and goes a completely different route from the first. It takes place in the city instead of the jungle, giving the predator rooftops and skyscrapers to hide and swing from like the trees in the original. Secondly it casts Danny Glover as our lead hero instead of another muscular action hero that would never live up to Arnold. The Predator is even slightly different in the sequel. He plays mind games with Glover by killing off all of his friends and fellow cops one by one and taunts him by leaving his murdered partners necklace dangling from a tree branch above his grave. You also have Gary Busey as a CIA agent tracking the Predator, and he gives one of the hammiest Busey lines ever (Lians, Tigahs, Beahs, OH MAH!!) And you even have the late great Bill Paxton as the comic relief character.
But other than that the movie moves at a quick pace. You are immediately thrown in a battle between the cops and two rival drug gangs. Explosions, gun fire, and car crashes in the opening scene. Also the Predator subway attack scene with Bill Paxton is so well done with the strobe lights.
But most importantly Predator 2 expanded on the mythology of the Predator more than the original without having an exposition scene to explain everything about the creatures (most sequels would give you the entire backstory.) Hell all of the cool gadgets that people associate with the Predator originated in Predator 2 (the sphere, the disc blade, the wire net)
tl;dr - Predator 2 is a very under appreciated sequel that deserves respect for being a damn good movie in it's own right.

One thing that always bothered me was when it kills King Willie it really felt like there was something that was left on the editing room floor from where he gets ready to fight and then cuts to his decapitated head in the Predators hand as it's walking away. Maybe it was just a strange edit but that always felt weird to me.
Also, where the frick does the top half of Gary Busey's body go when he gets cut in half?

It is definitely underrated. If it had more human tech to it, like Robocop, it could almost fall into the cyberpunk genre with the way they depicted the street violence in Los Angeles.
Danny Glover was a good choice.
Paxton’s character was great. Brass and everything was his speciality.

I’d never imagine anybody, ever, would put this much though into this movie, haha. I agree with your thoughts though, under rated movie.

90s movies seemed to have a very negative viewpoint about where LA was going, including Demolition Man and Escape From LA (though a sequel).
I guess there was some of that in the 80s too. I always like a good noir or cyberpunk environment.

Predator 2 is great. Predator in the tree while the kid is on the ground, King Willie, the sink scene, and the shot of the Xenomorph trophy. Definitely underrated. And Gary Busey

The whole ship scene was just cool IMO. And I really liked the trophy room part.
And I always liked that the one Predator gives him the 200 year old pistol. Gave some indication of how long these things have been around and visiting Earth.
I loved this movie as a kid. Bill Paxton was fantastic in it. So was Busey.

I've said it on this board before but Paxton has been killed by a Terminator, a Predator, and a Xenomorph.

after seeing this as a kid i made the argument (and still do) that they need to do one set in the past...maybe old west

I'd definitely watch.
And speaking of Cowboys and Aliens, I saw that in theaters. But haven't seen it since then, and been wanting to watch it lately. I just have a feeling I am gonna think it's terrible now.

Don't forget Kindergarten cop.
Just re-watched and they make LA seem like an absolute Hell Hole which it pretty much was.
But yes, I remember watching this as a kid and thinking LA was Hell on Earth.
Ironically I moved there after college for my first job. Minus a few areas, its obviously ridiculously nice throwing out the commute etc.
Skid Row is also an incredibly organized homeless center with many services etc. We volunteered there during the holidays.

I always found it a little weird because, while the Predator was never looking for a fair fight, I thought it at least wanted its prey to have a remote chance.
Unless the Predators wear armor appropriate to the level of civilization they hunt, having them operate in the 18th century would seem to be more like fishing out of a stocked pond.

Until Arnold, they were still like fishing out of a stocked pond.
