Was the book series really that popular to warrant this? The movie several years ago kinda sucked.

I read all of the books in middle school and loved them. That said, I was very young and have no idea how they'd carry over to today. Its been a long time since I've read them and I honestly can't remember a lot of what happened. At the time, everyone was reading them though. I had to imagine it was the 2nd most popular series for kids my age behind Harry Potter.
The movie did kinda suck, but Netflix has nailed most of their stuff so I have hope they could pull this off. I hope they are able to pull off the dark, quirky tone of the books.
