I would've woke up a better looking chick than JLaw. Too many moles.

How about an alternative ending suggested by a friend of mine.
quote:
Instead of the schmaltzy happy ending they had to have for a mainstream movie, have Chris Pratt die in space, then show her alone for about year and end with her finding someone in a pod and having to contemplate the same decision he had to make with her. And leave it ambiguous with what she actually decided.

I was expecting more but at least it wasn't a sequel or reboot. I do feel they missed a great opportunity to make a much better movie with the ending
I was hoping that Pratt died during the climatic scene. Then there was a great opportunity for JLaw to go through the same dilemma Pratt went through. They could have her wake up some dude. Or tease it with her crushing on some dude and have a spinning top moment like Inception. Ended with her looking at the pod. Or talking to he bartender about "her man". I would have given a few more stars if it ended that way and had the viewer scratching their head during the credits instead of what we all knew was going to happen

It was the definition of ".....meh...." I expected alot more sci-fi space type content but it was just a damn romance movie.

I was hoping she would go bat shite crazy from rage and start hunting him. She would have the rest of her life to kill him while he has to run and fight her off for the rest of his life.

Is this about United airlines?

I had the exact same thought. Could have been a much different film.
Still, I enjoyed it as an easy watch with two charismatic actors and nice set designs and effects, that actually depicted a pretty awful situation to be trapped in, and wasn't overly disappointed that they took the happy ending route.
That said, the ending was far too abrupt. It was almost like the director set a time limit for himself and was like "Oh shite only three minutes left, here I'll just tie this up with a quick voiceover".
Very strange, and took it from a solid three star popcorn flick to just a decent two star rental. Would have liked to see a bit more after they fixed the ship.

What's a popcorn flick?

I actually worked on it. The sets were incredible and it looked awesome on camera. The script was really good and I was expecting the movie to be awesome. That said, I was disappointed on how it turned out.

From Vince Mancini at Uproxx.com

then slowly, slooowly they start to fall for each other. Again, how long did we have to draw this out, really? If the only two awake people on a booze-filled luxury space ship to nowhere look like Chris Pratt and Jennifer Lawrence, the over/under on when they start f*cking is about 25 minutes, I guarantee you. People would screw their own family members if a camping trip went too long. I’m supposed to believe two attractive single people with 100% leisure time and unlimited booze didn’t instantly tear each other’s clothes off? Please.

They were traveling to a new planet to colonize and terraform.

Wow, I love that ending. I thought the movie was enjoyable but I think that could have really taken it up a notch.

Pratt should have died, she should have discovered she was pregnant

Agreed. How she has ever been considered a beauty icon is beyond me. She kind of grosses me out.

Here's a fascinating video essay on the movie, arguing the movie would work better if you just lopped the first third of the film off. Or at least moved it to after the second third. Essentially, there is more tension in the film if we watch it from Lawrence's perspective instead of Pratt's.

i saw it on a flight to canada and enjoyed it
This would have been awesome, especially if they show her being a hypocrite.

I just saw this the other day. While I considered that she might be faced with the decision to wake another passenger, and I often find the mega happy ending to be a cop-out, I didn't mind it at all this time. It's still interesting to wonder if you could come to terms with someone who stole your life, and ultimately, you know one of them will face the decision when the other dies. We already saw the consequences of the decision to wake. What are the consequences of not waking? Slowly going crazy? Suicide? Playing dance games 'til you drop? It's kind of a dead-end, and choosing "wake" sort of turns it into "Let The Right One In," only with the vampire changing periodically in addition to his/her helper.
