Hope so. Was looking forward to giant mechs battling giant aliens but it just didn't work for me. Even my 12 year old son and wife were meh. They both wondered "why all the sumo wrestling, just use the dang sword"

Your 12yr old son didn't like PacRim????????? That's just weird. I'm sorry, but it is.

Rest assured, that's about all the expectations I had for it. I am very good at tempering my expectations going into a film, which is why I not disappointed too often. But this was one of the times that I felt something came up a little short after watching a film.

Meh, to each their own. I would have liked to have seen more fight scenes and more involvement with the other Jaegers but I was definitely impressed with the fight scenes we did get, the effects, and especially the way the action sequences were shot. Just a great visual ride, IMO.

To be honest, I don't really mind Battleship either. It's better than what I thought it would be, which is something I guess. Rihanna is an annoyance though. It's like some execs just said, let's put Rihanna in the movie...for, ugh...well for no fricking reason.

I've heard plenty of reviewers and the director himself say Anime and I'm in no way, shape or form an Anime fan so I just take their word for it.

Basically its like saying the Walking Dead and Duck Dynasty are the same show because they are both set in the south and occasionally guns appear in both shows.

Anime - Japanese cartoons or those produced in other countries based on that style.

Toku - catch all term for an action/sci fi based japanese television show of which Sentai is a type of one.

Sentai - specifically Toku that focuses on a team (often 5 based on the five man band trope) that "changes" into powered spandex suits to fight an alien invasion of some sort. Power Rangers was this.

Metal Heroes - Usually a lone hero instead of a team, have armored metal looking suits. Kamen Rider is this. Big Bad Beetleborgs was as well.

They used the word Anime probably because Anime is popular already in the US and its a term taken slightly more seriously than Toku or Sentai.

Pacific Rim is definitely the closest thing to a completely American Sentai that actually worked. While it didn't have the classic suits associated with Power Rangers it did involving combining mecha piloted by humans (not sentient like Transformers) fighting alien invaders.

Most of the references I saw relating to Anime actually involved the camp/cheese quality of the actors and dialogues, some stereotypical characters like the over-the-top scientists for instance, stuff like that. But whatever, it's no big deal. Either way, I really enjoyed the movie.

Not to mention this complaint, in its most basic form, applies to 90% of movies, not even just sci-fi/action movies. You know why they can't just do X? Because then you're left with no movie moron.

No shite...I said the same thing this morning in the Purge thread a few threads down.

Battleship is laughably bad. It is an absolute guilty pleasure, and its a fun movie to debate the bullshite of it. Just about a perfect movie for the MST3000 crew to go after.

I think Pacific Rim is legitimately good though, so that's the one I choose.

This for me.

Battleship was trying to be a good movie, but the dialog, acting, etc was bad. Pacific Rim was trying to be campy at times and had much better actors doing that, so it worked entirely for me.

Pac Rim was silly and a straight up monster movie on purpose.

Now that definitely makes sense in that context.

I watched Pacific Rim and Elysium the last 2 days. I enjoyed Pacific Rim much more than Elysium. I went in expecting the opposite.

I didn't think the class warfare stuff was too in your face in Elysium. I just thought it didn't deliver on its promise. It was not a good performance by Damon. I thought it fell really flat.

Pacific Rim was very enjoyable. It was nothing special, but I would watch it again.

See I disagree on that...at least for the most part. They actually had the alien weaponry shoot peg-shaped artillery as per the little red and white pegs in the board game. Same thing with the buoy satellite system thing where the ships were jumping from square to square, just like the game.

I'm not saying the movie wasn't portrayed fairly straightforward, but the whole thing was a giant homage to the classic board game. I never felt like it took itself too seriously.

Did this recently. Pacific Rim was enjoyable but for some reason I found Battleship more satisfying and more in need of second viewing.

....you have got to be kidding.

Just watched Pacific Rim. It was awesome. Enjoyed Battleship as well but Pacific Rim was better done IMHO.
