Did this recently. Pacific Rim was enjoyable but for some reason I found Battleship more satisfying and more in need of second viewing. Rihanna didn't even suck in it. Cheesy as hell but a fun, fun ride.
I think the lead in Pacific Rim was so wooden it really lacked a punch. And yes, I am willing to be villified

Battleship is laughably bad. It is an absolute guilty pleasure, and its a fun movie to debate the bullshite of it. Just about a perfect movie for the MST3000 crew to go after.

I think Pacific Rim is legitimately good though, so that's the one I choose.

Battleship was disappointing. Rihanna was atrocious.

PacRim had equally bad dialogue but better action

OML, any movie America kicks arse in will always be enjoyable to me. It's a feel good, Merica fuk yeah movie. It's why I like battleship.

But you're correct in saying pacific rim is the better movie and I haven't seen it yet. It's on my to do list.

That's pretty much mu thoughts on it as well. I enjoyed Battleship.

Pacific Rim was just okay. I wanted to like it, but it was too ridiculous for me, and was laughably bad a lot of times.

But both movies fall into the "overly ridiculous" category, so all in all it's not a terrible double feature.

Was expecting more from Rim. Would rather watch BS again.

Pacific Rim's performance at the box office leaves some hope that Toku or maybe even Sentai have a potential market as a film with a big budget/taken seriously.

Hope so. Was looking forward to giant mechs battling giant aliens but it just didn't work for me. Even my 12 year old son and wife were meh. They both wondered "why all the sumo wrestling, just use the dang sword"

Well I'm hoping with Power Rangers getting a huge wave of nostalgia right now then we will see an American original Sentai or Kamen Rider.

Yup.

In a world that technologically advanced, hand-to-hand combat is laughable, especially on that kind of scale.

I'll watch anything with Brooklyn Decker. I'm sorry, I'm a fan.

That being said, Battleship was way less awful than people made it out to be. Its a guilty pleasure, although Taylor Kitcsh is not a great actor. Is it bad that I found the "battleship game" scene with the buoys more believable than kicking the dust off of the Missouri and having her sea worthy in a couple of hours?

Pacific Rim is a movie about giant robots fighting giant monsters. I went in expecting that, thats exactly what I got. Its very good and being that. The scene where Gypsy drags the ship down the middle of the city before cold clocking the Kaiju? Awesome.

The camp, cheese, stereotypes, dialogue, etc., was all done INTENTIONALLY as a throwback to the genre that spawned the movie. Pacific Rim gets criticized for issues such as those above even though they weren't done by mistake, they're specifically there to honor anime, the giant mech vs. giant monster genres that inspired the film.

You should go into see Pacific Rim for one reason: to see giant mechs beat the shite out of giant monsters. If you do that I can't understand how anyone couldn't love the film and if you go in looking for more than that then that's just your fault.

Actually they engage hand to hand and always try to hold back their signature weapons like Gipsy's plasma cannons and swords, Stryker's wristblades and shoulder missiles, because the Kaiju constantly adapt to whatever new weapon gets thrown at them so it makes sense to try to take it down hand to hand if possible, at the very least beat it down to a point where you can then employ the special/advanced weaponry to go for the killshot.

Not to mention this complaint, in its most basic form, applies to 90% of movies, not even just sci-fi/action movies. You know why they can't just do X? Because then you're left with no movie moron.

Why didn't Quint just go back and get a bigger boat?

Toku or Sentai not Anime. The only thing all three have in common is they are Japanese.

I've heard plenty of reviewers and the director himself say Anime and I'm in no way, shape or form an Anime fan so I just take their word for it.

Oh, I know that...that was pretty easy to realize.

But that didn't make any more enjoyable for me really, maybe because I was never into the things that it was throwing back to..??

It was just a bit too ridiculous for me. And it wasn't a "bad movie" IMO. I certainly didn't hate it and would see a sequel if there ever as one. I just didn't particularly like it a whole lot.

Rest assured, that's about all the expectations I had for it. I am very good at tempering my expectations going into a film, which is why I not disappointed too often. But this was one of the times that I felt something came up a little short after watching a film.
