I'm almost finished with season 2 on HBO Go. Some things I'm noticing now that never struck me as I was initially watching it in the late 90's (probably because the content was so shocking at the time)....... This show feels like I'm watching a prison version of "You Can't Do That On Television" that used to come on Nickelodeon. So many quick one-liners or 5 second situations that almost feel irrelevant in the grand scheme of things. These things NEVER occurred to me in 1997.

Anyway, it's awesome for nostalgic reasons, but nowhere near as great of a show as I remember. The Wire and Sopranos still hold up very well. Oz feels so lazy and gimmicky now.

Thoughts?

Agreed. I rewatched the Wire a couple of months back and now rewatching Sopranos, they both hold up today. The Sopranos more so as a comedy then anything else. Of all the series I've watched on the road the last several years, Oz is the worst. Its horrible in every way (acting, writing, direction). Rick Fox turned in the best acting job of the cast

Yeah, Jackson Vahue.

Also, Adebisi seems so cartoonish now, but in 1997 he motivated me to behave so that I'd never have to go to prison and deal with him. Maybe that's why it sucks to me now.... Because all of the characters that seemed so intimidating at one time, are the exact opposite now.

Would you say this shouldn't even be watched for historical value? Was a big deal during its time. I was planning on trying to go through it soon.

This show would be tough to marathon. Heck, it had plenty of eye rolling moments back when it originally aired. I liked the show but the 42nd time prisoners wandered around in dark corridors to rape or kill someone, I had a hard time taking it seriously.

It was a pretty good show the first couple of seasons but jumped the shark after Beecher killed the Nazi CO with his fingernails.

Yeah Cdawg, that's what's so mind boggling to me. At one time, I'd equate "Oz" to the greatest era of Sunday night HBO. But it's borderline terrible now, in 2015.

Maybe we can at least credit it as a launching pad, or rough draft that helped get the truly great shows right. Once they learned how to use the shock value in the right amounts and accommodate the story, instead of it being the other way around. Also, it definitely got me to a level of "nothing grosses me out anymore" as far as senses. I mean watching Beecher passionately French kiss Keller in season 2 made me less umm disgusted by the gays when I see it on tv now.

Not to mention the aging drugs, the musical episode, people being executed a few months after sentencing, etc. Not too many shows jump the shark that many times.

I just finished the episode where Adebisi falls in love with Shirley Bellinger and O'Reilley sets it up where Adebisi gets to go mop death row and have an opportunity to have his duck sicked.... Then he goes up to the cage and whips his penis out and she goes, "But you're a N-bomb."

they were in love via notes passed through lunch trays, but it never occurred to her that "Simon" was a black dude.

Great show, great cast. It pretty much kicked off 15 years of dominance that HBO has regarding cable tv shows.

On season 2 now. Missed the original run in the 90s and, as stated, its nothing groundbreaking now. But it is entertaining enough to watch. I can already tell that I'm going to give up on it early, though.

I'm now in the 2nd half of season 4 (which originally aired in 2001)..... Surprised I haven't completely stopped on the rewatch because I really only did this for nostalgia and just wanted to see the first 2 seasons. Season 4 is definitely the best season though as far as characters and writing (which isn't saying much as far as writing goes, though.) I think season 3 is when it started to find a peak and had the full audience bandwagon effect. I remember it being a big part of pop culture at the time, and you'd have the Adebisi references as jokes and whatnot on late night shows etc.

Stupidest shite so far, of any season, although intriguing..... The aging pill premise. A pill that ages you so many years, that you get credit as time served relative to the years it aged you. I totally forgot about this, but it's so stupid that anyone would even invent such a pill, where it's sole purpose was to decrease the prison population

Also, the Tim McManus always asking someone to dinner line. It was just as common as "you killed Kenny." Except I don't remember anyone ever making jokes about it. It kind of reminds me of Walt Jr. and his breakfast on Breaking Bad. An episode of Oz wouldn't be complete without McManus asking someone to have dinner with him.

I liked it when it originally aired but even then there were tons of eye roll moments.

I always say, about the 47th time someone is wandering around unsupervised in some dark hallway looking to rape or kill someone, it gets old.

Didn't they seal some guy off in a wall? I think the later seasons they just kept trying to one up themselves with crazier crap.
