Curious................

Why are you comparing 8 movies from 2014 to 17 movies in 2010??

I think that the Blockbusters are holding up well this Summer, it's the second tier movies with quality that are fewer.

Other than Grand Budapest and Chef, not many good indie movies this Summer.

EoT was really the best movie of the summer, IMO.

Yeah I forgot to include movies I haven't seen yet either. 22 Jumpstreet, Apes, and Hercules were all movies I want to see but just haven't had time.

Was it down from last year? Probably. But it's not as bad as it appears. In reality, the summer was just very front-loaded. There were too many movies people wanted to see in the beginning (late April and May) and they cycled out by mid June. Then there were several huge dead zones here in the mid to late summer. If the movie releases had been better timed it wouldn't seem as bad.

Hey, hate all you want but "Prince of Persia" was fun. I also loved "Get Him To The Greek", "The A-Team", "Knight and Day", and "Salt". "Robin Hood" wasn't bad either. Those are just the ones ya'll hated! 2010 was a VERY good year for movies.

"X-Men: Days of Future Past" and "22 Jump Street" are the only movies I've had the opportunity to see this summer and they were both phenomenal.

The only movie I got to see this summer.

Growing up sucks.

well, you must be a very pleasant guy to be around. It sounds like you really need to smoke a Jeffrey and stroke the furry wall.

All of this. I do think A Most Wanted Man will be good as well. I haven't seen it yet.

Haha ok. Sorry you like shitty movies.

I was responding to the OP that made the ridiculous claim that this was one of the worst blockbuster summer of all time. It's far from it.

I will say that I did laugh occasionally at GHttG. It was average.

It's a shame Edge of Tomorrow did so poorly domestically, as that was one of the most inventive and well-made action films of the past decade. It's killing overseas, so it is still profitable, but a movie that good should have been a no doubt about it hit. That way, Hollywood would make more good, original movies.

It got pulled early from theaters before I could see it too.

My friends and I laughed at the quoted critics which called it a "slow burn thriller" since we all knew its from the vein of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy which was a bore. They are stretching the definition of "slow" when its pretty much glacial.

Yeah, none of the movies I listed are high art, but they're fun. It's fun to watch the guys of the A-Team blow stuff up, it's fun to watch Jake Gyllenhall as a Persian Prince almost get murdered by an Ostrich racer, it's fun watching Angelina Jole kill just a ridiculous number of people, I mean, a really really ridiculous amount of people. Not every movie has to be some incredibly poignant, thought provoking film. Sometimes, it's fun to watch something over the top and campy. Movies are meant to be entertainment AND art. They can be either or both, it doesn't matter.

Looking at those two lists, I think 2014 might be the better one. I wouldn't really count Winter's Bone as a "summer blockbuster" either. If we're claiming that for 2010, then 2014 gets to claim Boyhood... but I think we're then talking about something different than blockbusters.

That's my point. Blockbuster-wise, 2014 shits on 2010. You have to included indies and non-popcorn flicks to get a decent list of good movies from the summer of 2010. The blockbusters alone from this year outnumber the entirety of strong movies from 2010's summer.

And I just picked out a year at random. If I actually did any extensive research, I'd probably find that this was one of the better summers in a while for blockbusters, but I won't make such an ill-informed statement, quite contrary to the OP.

I completely understand where you're coming from. It's not like I base my personal opinion on movies based on critics. I've hated some of the most critically-acclaimed movies, while I've loved some of the worst. I'm just trying to provide an objective POV to this discussion. Didn't mean to intentionally piss on movies you hold in high regard. It just so happens that I don't like a lot of those movies.

I've actually thought this was a great summer for blockbusters. I don't get to see as many movies as in the past, but everything I've seen this summer has been better than expected with the exception of Transformers.

X-Men, Planet of the Apes, Edge of Tomorrow, 22 Jump Street, and Guardians of the Galaxy were about as good as it gets when it comes to popcorn flicks. I can't recall a year since the 90's with 5 summer blockbusters I enjoyed this much.

Godzilla and Hercules both exceeded my expectations and were very enjoyable.

Spiderman, Neighbors, and Maleficent were enjoyable but nothing great.

The only bad movie I saw was Transformers, but I only saw it because my son wanted to see it. Unfortunately, it was not even enjoyable for a 10 year old.
