I'm watching The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Love this movie. Maybe I'm biased because I love Connery. But they don't use a lot of smoke and mirrors in it. Like Mr. Hyde's body suit. It gives a better feel to the movie IMO.

Then it has me thinking of Jaws and how they used a prop shark. And Jurassic Park with the prop dinosaurs. Granted those are both Spielberg, but you get the point.

I'm 24 and grew up watching the movies where the crews had to actually create these monsters and what not with their hands. I appreciate them more.

Just thought of another one, Tremors .

I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking this.

I'm a huge fan of the horror movie with hand made monsters. Even when you can see that the creature from the black lagoon is wearing an ill fitting suit its still better than CGI IMHO. Not everyone will agree and that's fine.

Well done practical effects almost always look better than cgi. I liked when they still used matte paintings for backgrounds too.

Matte paintings have become a lost art.

I know exactly what you're saying but I think they've gotten much better with the CGI over the years.

Compare John Carpenter's The Thing with the steaming turd prequel that came out a few years ago. One is legit scary with practical FX. The other is a cgi shitfest.

JP was a great mix of both and really paved the way for the future, but the T-Rex scenes with the animatronic are ridiculously fantastic.

I agree that CGI has gotten better, but I still appreciate the movies that don't rely heavily upon it like today's movies do.

Some others that are worth mentioning:

Aliens
Gremlins
Starship Troopers
Labyrinth
Terminator 2

What makes it worse is The Thing prequel was filmed with tons of practical effects done by ADI but the studio took most of them out and replaced them with CGI

Here is a video showing a lot of the cool practical effect they used LINK

Yep, CGI has come a looong way. Those Star Wars prequels were absolutely terrible to look at. Hurt-your-eyes bad.

The Thing is the ultimate use of props imo

You should check out FX. Its not a great movie or anything but a fun little thriller about a special effects man.

Which makes 2001 all the more impressive. Still looks amazing today.

Bladerunner is probably the finest "in camera" special effects film in history.

To me CGI always looks like CGI, no matter what.

I alway prefer practical effects.
