With yall on season 5, whatever happened with the backstory of Rawls being at the night clubs? Was that ever fully addressed or was that just thrown in there as a little wtf is going on?

They never brought it up again. Rawls may have been on the DL. Maybe he picked up the habit when he was a detective and just like the vibe of the place. But, it was never mentioned again.

I watched The Siege over the weekend, that came out in the late 90's, but both Lance Reddick and Wood Harris are in it. Also saw Wood Harris in Ant-Man.
If they had gotten some cop from the Wire for the Prius commercial, it would be the greatest commercial ever.

I'm sure Lance Reddick and Clarke Peters were available.

Outside of Elba and Michael B Jordan, has anyone on the show seen their careers take off?
Lots.
McNulty has been in lots of shite (notably 300).
Daniels was on Lost and Fringe, among other things.
Levy is now in weird arse comercials.
Nicky Sobatka has been in some shite (recently one of the soldiers in 13 Hours)
Frank Sobatka was already famous (in movies here and there...I think in 8MM with Nic Cage)
Carver has been in some shite (notably TWD as Gabriel)
Avon Barksdale was also already famous, but that dude is in a lot of shite since.
The newspaper boss was in Breaking Bad (among other things I assume)
Rawls is in lots of shite.
Beadie was in The Office and some movies.
That's off the top of my head. I'm sure there are a lot more. I don't know if anybody's careers "took off" after The Wire, but many people have been successful.

You left out one of the biggest names, Carcetti as Littlefinger in Game of Thrones.

Omar had a big role in Boardwalk Empire

OP is updated (although there are no longer any new episodes).
I was actually able to catch up completely last week and finish the series. I will post my thoughts today at some point.
Mainly, the serial killer thing was still ridiculous the second time through the series, but at the same time I view S5 a little better this time around. I guess I had forgotten just how much "street" shite was still involved aside from the papers. While it's still the weakest season of the show by far, it's still really good/compelling television.

that's pretty much how i feel. I liked the newspaper angle better this time, Templeton is a total douche, but the real "story" is how the paper pretty much misses every big story of the season.

Took:
Kind if meh, not much going on episode.
The kidnapping that guy and the call to Templeton is really where the serial killer thing jumps the shark. Now it's getting too much attention and Jimmy realizes he's in over his head.
Templeton's Bs is also starting to catch up to him.
Omar robbing and killing Stanfield peeps, calling out Marlo.
The big event is Clay Davis' acquittal. That's nice that he takes cash to hand out to needy constituents, but it is still illegal Pretty stupid in retrospect thinking they could get him in a city court.
Do love the Richard Belzer cameo in the cop bar.
Clarifications:
Omar getting popping shocked me the first time and even a little knowing it was coming this time. I didn't really remember Kenard the first time thru. seeing him fricking with Namond in S4, brings it in a little more. Especially when Omar comes limping thru and all the other kids haul arse. One of the great characters in TV history.
With more and more attention on the "serial killer", Jimmy is starting so show some regrets. The FBI profile describing Jimmy to tee was hilarious. Bunk, beyond pissed he can't get lab work done on Michael's step dad, forces Jimmy to sign off telling the lab its connected. Bunks case actually gives them something on Marlo's top guy. He obviously won't roll, but if the mayor and higher ups had let the major crimes unit continue, they would have gotten him.
Templton gets called out by a homeless vet for making up shite. The money quote is when the vet tells Gus they had chocolate milk and donuts after Templeton said they had coffee. Templeton is a shameless slimeball. He doesn't even have a soruce for his lede quote on the vigil smh. Meanwhile Fletcher gets an actually good homeless story.
Carcetti is finding out being mayor ain't so easy. Now he has to cut deals with Campbell and Clay Davis to get support for his run for Gov.

watching the series this go round i have a better understanding of why McNulty and Lester weren't thrown in prison for their shenanigans. It was also interesting seeing McNulty confront Templeton

Templeton is a lil bitch. Gus should have slapped the sit out of him. With his fake notebook.
I hate Kima as much as I hate Namond and Iggy. I wouldnt have drunk with her. What did she have to gain by snitching to Daniels. And Daniels get pissed even though he was dirty as frick in the Eastern.
Poor Dukie though, too bad he didnt run into Bubbles who turned out alright.

stealing money from drug dealers after they were arrested isn't the same as inventing a serial killer to run an illegal wiretap to finally nab a kingpin that they had been after for a few years

I'm much more sympathetic to both of those guys the 2nd time around.

Did they say exactly what he did, i don't remember the details if they did. Anyway, that's in the past. You could note though how pissed he was at Carver for leaking to Burrell in S1 when Burrell was Dpt Ops.

They never mentioned it. But like you said in the previous post, probably taking $$$ from the drug dealers.

yeah
daniels' last act being giving carver the stripes (to the rank daniels was at the beginning of the show, i believe) was poetic, after all the stuff they went through early on and the character arc that carver had once he became a leader (including writing on coke's favorite cop character)
trying to force sydnor into being the "new mcnulty" was forced

They deliberately (IMHO) left that vague so you would continue to be cautiously supportive of Daniels.
Realistically, cops make dirty money exactly the same way that Omar made it:
1. Payoffs from drug dealers
2. Robbing drug dealers
3. Selling drugs you stole from drug dealers
