But not without one heartbreaking scene from Season 4 that remains indelibly marked in my brain for posterity.

ETA: I need to catch up to be a part of this fantastic thread. It would be my third viewing of the series from beginning to end.

Whelp, I'm butting in here. Rewatch starting on Season 3, just started graduated to Season 4. Forgot about the opening of Season 4 with Snoop at the home improvement store.

**Spoiler**

Also forgot about something at the end of Season 3. I don't think I paid attention to the happenings in the sentencing scene with Avon, Brianna, and Marlo.

We need to remember to keep all future references out of here as much as possible (and I think we're doing a pretty decent job of that so far). Thanks. Current discussion is on E13 or S1 and S1 as a whole.

And Lew, sorry you came across spoilers...that definitely sucks. I was spoiled on a character's death on this board in a completely unrelated thread. Pissed me off terribly.

Season 1 had nice bookend episodes - Ep 1 had the "good guys" losing, "Nicely played" - and reversed fortunes by season's end.

We also saw the "bad guys" as a thinking, reacting organization. They adjusted to police tactics. They probably made a mistake by killing the "working man" witness, and would probably freely admit that in hindsight, it was the wrong call.

As the theme will get continued throughout the series - cops are far more tolerant of crime that doesn't yield violence and far less of crime that is inextricably linked to it.

However necessary the drug organization thinks it is to maintain credibility, instill fear and respect, etc., the murders draw media attention, community rejection and ultimately, they put together a task force to get yo' arse.

Couple of thoughts on season 1. This was my second time to go all the way through and I think it is the best season of any show I've seen. And i think it is the detail they show. The characters have depth, not just extreme cliches of good cops and bad drug dealers or even bad cops. We see the true nature of the bureaucracy and how big of a role politics plays in even murder investigations.

I mentioned earlier Bunk is a character i really liked in later seasons but didn't remember how much he was involved in season 1. Bodie is another character i appreciate much more the 2nd go round. He reminds me a little of Bunk in that he sees the BS around him, but just does hims job and tries to move up. He takes orders but knows sometimes the boss (D) is full of crap.

Lester remains my favorite character from season 1. I think once he realizes the detail might do some actual police work and there are good po-lice (McNulty and Kima) he gets back in the game and shows he's a great cop getting Avon's pic and then D's pager, working the wire and finally getting Sydnor and Prez on the money trail. ETA: How could i forget to mention my favorite Lester moment of all, Shardene. "Protect and Serve Lt."

Some of the best moments are when the police are doing real police work. The "frick" scene with Jimmy and Bunk investigating that girls murder and the way they process the scene after Kima is shot.

Yep, Dee even said in the beginning 5-0 dont care about project n!ggas getting high, its about the bodies.

Outside of Jimmy, no one knew who B&B were even after killing the working man. Hell if it wasnt for Jimmy being Jimmy, I believe they thought the working man was part of the game. Bird dumbass should have got rid of the gun though lol.

B&B were some smart guys for sure. The whole pager thing jumping the 5 was genius

Agree, I was hooked after the 1st episode. The Wire is my favorite show ever, I can watch it over and over.

Every character plays their role so naturally. Its crazy that their are characters you love/hate on either side of the good guy bad guy spectrum.

The "frick" scene was hilarious. Kima getting shot was so intense and then hearing it over the radio

I will respond to other posts tomorrow. But wanted to get my thoughts in on E13 and S1 in before the discussion moved on (was out of town this week and super busy when I got back Thursday).

Ole bunk talking Kima into naming Weebay. But she ain't buying. Kima is good pohleese.

Dee spilling guts. Bey is the one that killed Diedre. I thought I remembered that Dee was full of shite when he was bragging to them boys about her.

"I was freer in jail than I was at home." Dee.
That's some real arse shite. And kinda sad if you think about it. Dude just wants to be normal now and he basically can't because of what he's done and who he is.

Bodie beasting on dudes selling new shite with a baseball bat. I love that dude.

"They frick up they get beat. We frick up they give us pensions." Carv.
So true. And such a dichotomy of the drug game versus the cop game. One side fricks up and you're dead. Other side fricks up and they cover for you and you're prolly better off than you were before.

Cool scene with Jimmy and Kima at the hospital. Jimmy always showing true emotion.

"Hey McNutty, don't tell her." Bubbz.
Man, that shite sucks. He was doing so well too, but now he's back on that shite. One of the best things about this show is the ups and downs of pretty much everybody.

Freamon PIMPING on some Shardene.

Dee's mom is all wrapped up in the game and Dee trying to gtfo. She's consumed. She's addicted to the lifestyle and goes out of her way to speak for her son...but not for his protection (although that's part of), but also so she can keep her way of life afloat. I can't stand her.

"Where don't u wanna go?" to McNulty. We already saw him say docks earlier in the season. I guess this is him realizing that he's about to get fricked.

I love Levy so much. He's just so damn good at what he does. And he knows that while this is a career case they've made, the main players (aka the ones that keep him paid) are still pretty much untouchable and will be fine. He's so smug. It's awesome.

Weebay bossing in interrogation. Dude copping to bodies left and right.

Bodie and poot movin up.

Love the montages for the seasons. They're another of the "best things about the show."

And Omar still beasting in the end.

Awesome season. I loved the "Nicely played" line from Stringer to McNulty. Nice throwback. And the episode ending with Omar's "All in the game, yo" is a perfect final line for the season. No matter how much good police work they do, the game is the game and will always be there.

So per the montage to set up S2: Stringer walks. Avon basically walks. Bey takes the rap for most of the bodies. Bodie and Poot running the pit now. Bubbz back on the shite and back to scheming. Bird may get out since Bey cops to killing Gant. Carv is promoted. Herc teaching young cops what he learned (was he promoted though?). McNulty is moved to harbor duty. Kima still deciding. Freamon back to pohleese and he and Bunk work together now (kinda like he took Jimmy's old spot).

Seriously one of the GOAT season ones in all of television.

BODIE: Motherfricker, what the frick is up?! Huh?! frick is y'all doin'? Yo, do what you feel. But be ready to finish what you start. What is you doin'? This ain't no open market, you know that.

That's the most interesting part of all of this to me. First time around, I don't remember how (certain people) come into power. So I am looking forward to remember how all of that happens.

Season two!

Ebb Tide.

So we're only a few minutes in and already we see Prez's father-in-law and all the bureaucratic bullshite that comes along with him. I have this ear and he has that ear and all that shite. And he wants to make Prez sergeant solely because he has the pull to do so. So stupid. frick him.

Bodie not knowing about radio stations. That's pretty poignant IMO, and I bet a lot of kids in his situation literally have no idea how radio station signals work and that different stations outside the city even exist.

"Girls always told me about the little man in the boat. Now I know who they're talking about." Man I love Bunk. Another one: "The Bunk can't swim."

Random note: Saw 13 Hours this weekend and couldn't place one of the soldiers in it. Looked it up later, and it was Nicky Sobotka.

Ziggy onscreen for all of five seconds and I already hate that motherfricker. Ugh.

So they shipped Daniels down to evidence. Damn. Dude definitely stepped on the wrong toes for sure.

Avon beasting in prison, and still pretty much running shite via Stringer. "Only do two days. The day you get in this motherfricker. And the day you get out this motherfricker."

Jimmy tracing the tides and winds to drop the bodies on Rawls is completely awesome and hilarious. I love Jimmy so much.

So Bodie (and Poot, to a lesser degree) is running the pit now, and Stringer is noticing. Bodie still making moves, and I love it.

13 dead hookers in a cargo container? That shite must belong to Craig James.

Collateral Damage.

Police departments are so weird, man. So nobody wants to take the bodies because it is too much paperwork? 13 dead bodies in a fricking shipping container and no police department gives a single frick, and on top of that, they all try to avoid having to do anything about it. Nice.

I forgot a lot of the bullshite in S2 was hinged upon that stupid fricking church window. How stupid is that? I guess Polacks take their church donations seriously.

Ole McNulty trying any and everything he can to still be able to poh-leese. Dude waltzes in there and in five minutes he turns 13 accidental dead bodies into murders. And the fact that he dumps it all on Rawls's department to frick him as much as possible makes him try even harder. Hilarious.

Valchek trying to get the detail started on Sobotka. And ole Prez is up in there. Shocker. And all for some fricking stained glass window retribution. Dick.

Avon knocking down some KFC in prison. I love that dude. And Weebay still crazy about his fish, even when they're little fake plastic ones.

"Tell me about it, Mr. Thirteen Years."
"And four months."

Jimmy and Ronnie Pearlman. Women be shoppin', man. Women be shoppin'.

It's a little bit of a throwback to the 19th and early 20th Century. Before WWII - most Americans never traveled more than 50 to 60 miles from where they were born. Those that did were generally of the upper class. Obviously, you had military, sailors and whatnot, but for the most part dozens (if not hundreds) of millions of folks never saw anything of their world beyond a day or so ride in a wagon.

I've learned to despise that POS throught the series. It also made the later seasons all the more true to life.

Also think it's a little strange that Roberto and the NYC connect are pulling away from Avon without even so much as a meeting. I know String talked to their lawyer, but he said that they are wondering if Roberto's arrest was connected to B&B getting blown up with the wire case. And that makes sense. But to not even speak or have a meeting about it? That doesn't seem to make much sense because I assume that was a pretty symbiotic business relationship. And surely they would know that Avon was so far removed from wrongdoing that a light sentence is more than plausible, rather than automatically assume he flipped on them to get a plea deal. And he got 7 years, so it's not like he got off super light really.

I dunno, that whole thing felt sort of weird to me.

Haven't knocked out Ep 1/2 yet but Valchek was anal, egotistical bitch. Little man syndrome, obviously bullied as a kid. He is easy to hate, giving Catholics a bad name lol

In regards to Prez getting promoted even though he sucks as a cop, its all about who you know. Prez would have been gone long ago if it wasn't for Valchek being his FIL.

I took that whole situation as NYC being really cautious about not being seen talking to anyone involved with B&B, due to the wire being up, etc. Hell, the fact that Stringer had to go all the way up to NYC just to meet with their LAWYER kinda shows how careful they are.
