Reality TV comes to NetFlix

quote:

Netflix currently has 30 original scripted series in various stages of development or release, and in 2017 it’s going to go big on unscripted shows, according to chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

In 2017, Netflix plans to debut 20 unscripted shows, including global competition series, “Ultimate Beastmaster,” produced by Sylvester Stallone and “The Biggest Loser” EP Dave Broome.

...“Unscripted television is a very interesting business,” Sarandos said, saying the company is focusing on shows that are “more likely to travel internationally.” For example, “Ultimate Beastmaster” will feature athletes and announcers from six different countries (the U.S., Brazil, South Korea, Mexico, Germany and Japan). “When ‘Beastmaster’ hits in Korea, they’ll never have seen anything like it,” he said.

Sure sign of a downward spiral - just in time for Disney to buy them out.

Well - it's been a great run. Time to start looking forward to the post-Netflix era in a few years.

If they use these shows to fund the production of quality programming I am ALL for it. It isn't like network TV where it will consume any of the available broadcasting time slots.

Fair point. I just hope they don't use it to appease demands for content.

If these are good type reality shows, I may watch them. Like if its entertaining competition shows like "Top Chef" or "Face Off". As long as they aren't following around Kardashians or horrible real housewives.

I don't care about the idea, but 20 bothers me. That's a lot of shows.

I need some filters on Netflix so I can just ignore stupid stuff like this.

The dirty secret of peak TV. Terrible reality shows make great TV possible because the networks save their money for the prestige shows, and make their money off cheap, easy to churn out crap.

I don't think it works that way under Netflix's model. Everyone pays the same monthly fee whether you're watching the most popular shows or least popular shows. The only way I see them making money off one show in particular is if they eventually sell the syndication rights to cable. I can see them doing this with some of their movies and maybe a few of the series like Kimmy Schmidt and The Ranch.

Agreed.

If Netflix were to show that 100,000 people watch this show on a regular basis then it could be leveraged into a syndication with ad revenue.

I wish there were more Top Gear/Grand Tour type shows. Fun carefree informative shows.
