Just got this email from my sons middle school...

quote:

Concerns have been growing in our community and school throughout this week regarding student conversations generated from the viewing of the Netflix series, "13 Reasons Why." The series follows the fictional story of a teenage girl who leaves behind 13 mysterious audio recordings on cassette tapes after killing herself. She addresses each recording to a person who she says played a role in her tragic decision to end her own life. Several parents have called our offices this week to ask if we were seeing any signs of the program's impact. To date, all we have noted is conversation; however, some of the conversations reached a level that caused us to make contact with a few specific parents. Today, we decided it wise to simply alert all of our families of the popularity of the program so that parents might make informed decisions as to the appropriateness of the show for their own children, as well as options for parent-child co-viewing and post-viewing dialog.

Live streaming the act

Has been happening already for numerous crimes. As society's narcissism is continually fueled through social media, people will continue to go to extraordinary lengths to stand out. I'm sure there will be copycats, but I don't this show will be the cause per se, but maybe just an inspiration for how to carry out the act.

Wife and I finished it last night. Decent series, but man does Hannah suck. I can understand a few of the reasons why she felt she needed to take her life: the rape, the witnessing of a rape, Jeff dying, student council dude trying to cop a feel, but she really let too much bother her. Maybe I'm forgetting what it was like for me in High School, but I'm pretty sure I didn't take everything that seriously. And really, frick her for blaming Clay for anything when she told him to get the frick out and he obliged.

It was a culmination of all of it. That was an overwhelming amount shite for one teenage girl to do endure. She wasn't an adult. She didn't reason like an adult would.

Can we discuss how these kids are sophomores in HS and tatted up from head to toe

Surprised it took this many pages before someone brought this up. As the first poster to respond to your post said, it seems like they made it a point to emphasize body art on the show. I didn't understand this element. shite, I'm only 10 years removed from high school; is this more normal now? Am I old? Who am I??

When I was in high school there were kids with tattoos but most were covered up. It certanily was no where near the amount in the show or at least the school would make them cover up

One thing that cannot be denied is that this show has people talking. Gotta give them credit for doing that.

This is a great show, and it brings a light to the issue of bullying. But I believe a large thing that a lot of people are looking over is grief.

In this show, Hannah has only been dead for a short amount of time, most of these kids are all grieving in different ways. They are all(except Bryce it seems) trying to accept the fact in many different ways that they caused someone to commit suicide. That is too heavy a burden to bear. I know because I have had 2 friends commit suicide, all I could think about was that it was my fault. It was my fault that I wasn't a good enough friend. I Just knew he killed himself because I didn't pick him up on my basketball team, or when I chose to hang out with a girl instead of him.. That ate me inside for years. If i didn't have the support system I had around me in my family and best friends, who knows what I could have done...

So while I obviously feel for Hannah, I can't help but feel for the rest of these kids as they try to cope with this, not to mention they just lost another classmate in jeff. That is a Huge thing and can be very scarring.

I just got a letter from my kid's school's superintendent warning about the content of this show related to high school and suicidal tendencies. Guess I'll have to check it out.

So a season 2 is apparently happening. I can't really think of where they will go with the story from here.

I totally agree. Not only does the show portray her home life and relationship with her parents as strong but a child with that sort of parental support 99% of the time will reach out to their parents for anything bothering them.

Some things I didn't agree with the show on were:

1. Dude is a peeping tom. You take offense to this but don't want to turn him in to the police so instead you initiate a bullying campaign the likes your tapes are fighting against?

2. The counselor tried to help. You didn't want to give up the name of the guy who hurt you. Show even portrays him pushing you for a name so he can help. You decide he didn't do enough without a name; his hands are tied legally.

3. Asian basketball player didn't do shite. "Oh no, he stole my notes..." Give me a break. That didn't warrant a tape, at all.

4. The show definitely glorifies suicide. It shows it as a way to end things easily while also creating drama for those left behind with rippling consequences. Teenagers will eat that up as a viable alternative to life.

BS, he told her tell me who did it or get over it. He didn't need to know the name to give her support or at the very least help her find a qualified victim support counselor or support group. Sure he couldn't take it to the police but at the point she wanted a shoulder to cry on not a criminal investigation.

I agree with your points 1 and 3 though, especially 1.

I mean, I guess I'd have to rewatch the scene but to me it seemed like he was trying. I'm sure he could have been more supportive and consoling but in this day and age with lawsuits and stringent training of faculty, I bet it would be hard to do anything of the sort without feeling like you may be crossing a line.

I also hated how the tapes almost blamed the counselor entirely. We just watched 12 episodes of all this shite piling up and she reaches out at the last minute and then puts him on the last tape as a "this was the last straw" making our white knight protagonist angry.

I also hated how they showed Hannah getting pissed at Clay for not trying more after she denied him. What type of precedent does that set? Girl says no when you're fooling around, he asks if she's alright and she says leave and he obliges. Tape says "I wish you would have tried more." Like, what? How many news stories do we hear of women yelling "rape"? I'm definitely teaching my sons to steer clear if a girl says no.

To me the show opened up a box of showing kids who don't know how to deal with real life situations more than suicide and bullying. 95% of the things Hannah went through were trivial; sure, you could say it all built up over time but it just left me banging my head against the wall hoping that my future child wouldn't be so ignorant.

Well obviously the big event will be Tyler shooting up the school. And of course the fallout after will be dealt with. There's the whole think with Alex and where ever Justin went. Bryce will probably go to jail and who knows what's going to happen with Clay

I finished this series this morning while working. I did not read any of this thread before hand because I wanted to watch it and make my own decision how I felt about it. I kind of expected something more to happened at the end but it pretty much did what I expected it to do from the beginning

There were a few things that happened to Hannah that were out of the ordinary. No person deserves or should expect to be raped or taken advantage of sexually. Brice deserved to have his arse kicked then sent to jail for his actions. There really is no reason for that. The kid who took the pictures outside her window deserved the same.

Other than those two instances, I can not see anything that happened to her that does not happen to kids in high school or people in everyday life. We ALL deal with some kind of harassment or "bullying", which seems to be the new popular word, throughout our lives. The degree varies but it is there. Its just something that everyone receives at some point and has to deal with.

Leaving the tapes behind was a dick move. IF she had felt so bad about the things that had happened to her, she should have came forward to someone. She never did at any point. She beat around the bush with her counselor but he is not a mind reader. I get that he should have noticed some tendencies but if something is so bad that you feel you need to take your own life, its time to confide in someone.

I come out of this thinking Hannah was a coward and was just looking for some one to blame for the fact she was not the most popular and thought of in a way she wanted to be.

Most people face not being the prettiest or richest, smartest, most athletic, most popular person in their surroundings. Its just part of life. No person has it all. And that will not change or get better as you get older.

Yes, she had some bad things happened to her that should have been dealt with.

i don't hate the series or anything, but there is some pretty unrealistic stuff happening:
-everyone has tattoos
-clay (almost) bangs two of the hottest girls in school.
-tony, the midget gangster homo mexican
-bryce living by himself for weeks at a time as a junior in HS
-clay's parents letting him run around town after being caught with marijuana at school
-alex getting to hang with the popular kids
-alex banging jessica
-much, much more

-everyone looks like they just stepped out of a j.crew catalog.. even all of the teachers.
-no one has acne; everyone has clear skin
-no one is ugly... I'm not just talking about someone being unattractive - not a single one of them has a jacked up face, or anything other than perfect teeth
-none of them were poor... lol, even the guy who talked about about the other "rich white people" had a well taken care of classic car, a reasonable wardrobe, and a house in a clean neighborhood.
-they all have their hair fixed up EVERY SINGLE DAY... not even Phi Mu chicks go through that much effort.

I attended a private school, a not-so-cheap one, and even there we had a few ugly kids, a few kids who didn't know how to dress (even by HS standards), and most didn't walk around wearing designer watches or pearl necklaces.

He didn't seem like he was trying. Dude did an extremely poor job as a guidance counselor and then kept his trap shut about her coming to him after the suicide. He knows he fricked up and he kept quiet about her reaching out for help from him. Be interesting to see how it plays out since the parents have the tapes now and she recorded the conversation, I believe.
