I'd like to see Amazon either price out or absorb Netflix and use their ridiculous amount of cash to strike more deals for streaming content than Netflix could dream of.

If Amazon wins the bid for Hulu things will become interesting for sure.

So long Netflix.

It's been fun.

They didn't end the contract, Starz publicly claimed that they've ended negotiations for renewal of a deal that still is 6 months away from ending. Starz was getting $30 million per year from NetFlix and is now going to get at least $200 million per year. They aren't going anywhere unless NetFlix is crazy enough to believe their own BS about their customers not caring about newer releases.

To all who are saying goodbye netflix, I don't see that happening. Sure this is a huge blow to their streaming catalog, but they still have everything for rental on dvd, which is tons more than there ever has been for streaming. More than half of the movies on my queue I will never get to see on redbox, so it's not like they will take all of netflix's business. And movie gallery and blockbuster sure as hell won't be taking netflix's customers.

Are there any stats as to how many members ditched DVD's with the changes? I for one did. I don't see people going back to DVD's with this. They just say frick it.

I know other people that did the same. Except I think they just said frick it to netflix as a whole. Personally, the price increase only got me for one or two dollars so it's no big deal for me. And I kept dvds because of the obscure shite that you will never find on redbox and still aren't on instant.

Keep in mind that report talking about netflix developing a show with David Fincher involved. So I don't think they're out of the fight just yet.

I don't completely understand how this all works. Where does the content that is streaming through PLEX come from?

Netflix says, "No Starz. No worries."

This was pretty much what I was thinking. All this Netflix is kind of ridiculous. They'll be just fine. Starz content, outside of Party Down, sucked.

If they reinvest the money they would have spent on Starz into more content, I can see this working out well for them.

Yep. I'm pretty pro-Netflix (it's still by far the best deal around) but even if I wasn't, this isn't that big a deal. Losing Disney, however, would probably be a bad thing.

Is Pixar stuff included in this group? If not, when was the last time Disney really put out anything worth a shite? I haven't seen any Disney classics on instant.

I disagree with those that think this won't hurt. It will crush them. You are wrong. Plenty of the good current films that are on the site come from their deal with Starz.

To all of those that think It won't hurt them to go from $30 mil to $200 or even $300 mil with their deal with Starz, I direct you to their annual report 2010.

LINK

Net Income for the WHOLE year was $160 mil. Adding $140 - $240 mil in additional expenses wipes out their profit and makes them nothing more than a slave to the movie studios.

If they allow Starz to dictate such a crushing price, then they will have to do the same with other studios.

They are about to get squeezed very hard and it could end up killing them.

I agree that at their peak stock price, they should have tried to purchase a studio or cable channel.

If they lose this battle and cave to Starz, their stock price will drop like a stone, because they will no longer be able to make a profit without jacking prices significantly higher which will push a large number of customers back to piracy.

That's what the recent price increase was about, because they and everyone that analyzes the stock has known that costs were about to go up 10 fold. $9.99 streaming and DVD was an unsustainable price point. $7.99 streaming is unsustainable as well.

It's been rumored that what really killed the deal wasn't the price but that Starz wanted them to move to a tiered pricing structure and Starz wouldn't be in the most basic price. This is bad if they didn't want to do that because that's exactly what they need to do. For the people that just want TV reruns charge $5.99 per month. People that want movies and premium cable too can add the Starz package, the HBO package etc. Starz supposedly was worried they were losing their premium image by being on NetFlix and HBO has said NetFlix would need to charge about $20 per month to get content from them. If they want to survive they will have to tier their streaming.

I'm not so sure about that. Some will go to piracy, but if this board is any indication there's a large demand for a duplication of the premimum cable channels plus their back catalogs for $30ish per month.
