Why does every movie trailer have an old song re-recorded by some new band/artist?

Yes, it is the current thing to do.

I forget which trailer started this?

I think the Age of Ultron trailer definitely helped it pick up momentum, but it was around that time...

They are just trying to match up with nearly every movie being a remake or reboot?

I hate when I see the trailers with inappropriate music. Example Star Trek going with a Beastie Boys song. When I saw that I instantly knew that I would not be seeing it in the theater.

Yeah, except that particular song played a critical role in the movie itself.

It's also a TON cheaper to pay for a cover versus the original song/artist.
