I was watching 21 Grams last night on HBO. I remember seeing it a long time ago at the theater but my God was this one of the most depressing movies I've ever seen. In fact I had to turn it before I offed myself into my empty glass of whiskey. I digress...It got me thinking - what are some of the most depressing movies you've ever seen?

A few of mine of late...

Revolutionary Road - tremendous performances by Leo and Winslet but the movie itself was a steady decline into misery with literally no climb back up.

21 Grams (aforementioned)

Million Dollar Baby - what a horrific and terrible ending

Personally, as I said above, watching 21 Grams just had me questioning why movies like this are even made. The re-watch value is just terrible because the movie makes you feel like complete shite.

They make them because obviously they made an emotional impact on you. You don't have to leave every movie feeling happy.

I say this many times on here but Lilya 4-Ever is by FAR the most depressing movie I've ever seen. Its a fantastic movie but it will destroy your great day

The Road belongs on the list as well

Many people have this #1 but I haven't seen it. I'll probably never watch this movie now.

The Wrestler ruined my whole week when I saw it. Requiem for a Dream right behind that.

Also, Old Yeller still kills me at the end.

Superior Pariah,

I guess you and I are the only ones who saw Lilya-4-Ever. These people are listing movies that, I would say, pale in comparison.

Ever seen:
Christiane F (1981)
IMDB

Enjoy crying yourself to sleep tonight.

Finally someone who knows what I'm talking about and like you said, all the other movies listed are nothing compared to Lilya. And im not trying to sound like an elitist, its just a fact. I haven't seen the one you listed but ill look into it

Lilya.

quote:

Lilya 4-ever is an unremittingly brutal and realistic story of the downward spiral of Lilya, played by Oksana Akinshina, a girl in the former Soviet Union whose mother abandons her to move to the United States. The story is loosely based on a true case and examines the issue of human trafficking and sexual slavery

I'd imagine that gets pretty depressing. I've never heard of it before this thread

Absolutely nothing good happens to her the entire movie and just when you think the movie might turn in her favor, its quickly diminished

The fact that a movie can make a person emotionally feel anything is pretty impressive. I love movies that end in a realistic and downer fashion. Too many studios cop-out after test-screenings and go butcher the film by adding 3 minutes of positive resolution.

Grave of Fireflies

The Boy in Stripped Pajamas . would say most depressing but its a pretty damn sad movie.

Rocky V. The story was kinda depressing, but what really depressed me was how shitty the movie was and how it besmirched on of the greatest franchises of all time.

I haven't seen and probably never will see Precious but just what I've heard about the story leads me to believe it's probably one of the most depressing and disgusting movies of all time.
