We're now just days away from the release of Disney's Moana and critic reviews are coming in quickly. Here's a quick explanation of how I'm going to update this and how to read the thread title for a quick update of the most recent scores.

By popular demand on this board for these kinds of threads, the subject line includes MetaCritic and Rotten Tomatoes (RT) scores. In parentheses next to each score is the number of reviews the score is based on. Once Moana has a rotten score, I will change what is in parentheses to show fresh scores out of total scores– i.e. (14/15).

For those who may not know, MetaCritic shows more of the critics' ranking of the film, while Rotten Tomatoes merely shows what percentage of critics viewed the movie at least somewhat positively.

I'll try to up date this a few times a day and I'll include some non-spoiler review snippets at some point.

Select Reviews:

quote:

Contemporary Disney at its finest - a vibrantly rendered adventure that combines state-of-the-art CG animation with traditional storytelling and colorful characters, all enlivened by a terrific voice cast.

-Michael Rechtshaffen: Hollywood Reporter
quote:

The film delivers the strong humor, well executed action, memorable music and lovable characters Disney has perfected in a delightful and lovely manner.

-Eric Goldman: IGN Movies
quote:

No, these things don't all blend together well, but if you can follow Moana's island society's lead and just roll with it, you'll enjoy them one by one.

-Michael Arbeiter: Nerdist
quote:

It's a basic Point-A-to-Point-B adventure film, but with so much life, energy and emotion. It's perfectly cast, and the animation -- particularly the parts with the ocean in them, which is almost all of it -- is jaw dropping

-Poppy-Jay Palmer: SciFiNow
quote:

Pixar who?

-Roger Moore: Movie Nation

Rotten Tomatoes will show how critics reviewed a movie on the desktop site if they put it in. Most just ignore it

Yep. It's basically the same as MetaCritic in this instance at 7.8 out of 10. When Id id the Civil War TomatoWatch thread I included it, but I figured I'd just give the people what they want instead this go-round.

Daily bump. Briefly had a negative review on Rotten Tomatoes, but it was just a glitch. There are a few less enthusiastic reviews, which I'll try to add quickly.

It's looking good so far though

Still no negative reviews yet. Moana is tracking right alongside fellow Oscar contenders Kubo and the Two Strings and Zootopia.

Kubo: RT 97% MC 84
Zootopia: RT 98% MC 77

First rotten review drops the RT score a percentage and metascore drops two points to 80.

Moana looks lovely, and it gives us a princess we really haven't seen before. Those elements are surrounded, though, by too much that's all-too-familiar.

I'm a huge animation fan. I used to want to work for Pixar. And I figured I'd continue my plan to bump this each day until the release since it still provides good updated info on the critic ratings for people on the forum that may be watching it but don't reply.

Speaking of, this is probably my final update as the movie has been widely released today. It will still probably get 100 more reviews, but the purpose of a CriticWatch thread like this, in my opinion, is in the lead-up to the release.

I may end up doing it throughout the opening weekend though, but I'm not even sure if anyone is actually paying it any attention, like the man said

If anybody wants to talk spoilers discussion in this thread, let me know as I'll be watching the film tonight. If a few people want to, I'll switch the purpose of the thread into a discussion thread.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone

Just took the whole family, and this was a really bad film for Disney. Animation was good, but just didn't have the soundtrack or flow to rival past Disney productions. My 2 year old liked it, but my older kids and wife, who's a big Disney fan, didn't like it at all. I was a little bored by it tbh. I doubt it has broad age appeal like past efforts IMO. It's probably a 3 star at best.

Just got out and I think this is Disney's best animated feature since Wreck-it-Ralph.

Although the concept isn't nearly as inventive as Wreck-it-Ralph, the movie reflects the simple kind of adventure story one might expect to be folklore.

The animation is stunning. I'd say its definitively Disney animations best CG animation yet, and is only rivaled really by Pixar's background environment in Good Dinosaur. The difference with this movie is that the characters actually fit into the world.

Speaking of characters, these were really great characters. Moana stands alongside just about any Disney princess in characterization. Up there with Belle, Mulan, Rapunzel and Tiana. The Rock is great as Maui, especially when he's toned down. And they even used the stupid chicken well enough for me to like it.

I absolutely loved the soundtrack. Maybe its just different tastes for different people, but I thought the music really worked well with the movie and it was great to hear the native songs alongside the English. While it may not have a "Let it Go"I liked the way the songs worked together better than in Frozen.

I didn't love Tamatoa, but that seems to be a matter of preference as well. I'll save my other criticisms for when I make this a spoiler discussion in a few days.

I really enjoyed the movie. I thought Dewayne Johnson made Maui.

Took the kids for Thanksgiving. Wife and kids loved it.

I thought it was pretty good. Zootopia and Kubo were better in my opinion.

I actually preferred Trolls to this as well since we seen that one the week before. Maybe cuz it was livelier/music

A lot of the Rock's lines were pretty hokey but it had a great score. Much better than Frozen's soundtrack. It reminded me of the early 90s Disney music.

It was cute.
My only gripe was they introduced the pig and you thought the pig would have had a bigger role in the movie.

Great movie. The animation of the ocean was amazing. Good story. The Rock was great as Maui.

I also thought the pig would've been a better choice as the main comic relief than the chicken.

Kids loved it.
