Michael Fassbender As Macbeth: "How full of scorpions is my mind?"

For those that may not be familiar with the story, Macbeth in this scene is expressing his frustration at how, even though he is now King of Scotland after murdering Duncan, he has no heir to the crown. He states further that he did not come this far only to have his lineage usurped by the children of his suspicious friend Banquo and, therefore, he has decided to murder Banquo's entire family.
He truly is a brilliant actor. The best portrayal of Macbeth since Olivier.

He is so good at becoming the character that you can fail to notice or forget that it is Michael Fassbender.

To me that is the goal of a great actor, to make you forget they are acting.
He's one of the best. Still need to see this though.

I always thought Macbeth as just a story is incredible and would like to see a quality adaptation without all the Shakespearean language. To me it gets tedious. Just the premise of Scotland, Macbeth, Lady Macbeth, Duncan, the witches, the Army hiding as trees, etc. It's just such a great premise and maybe the most epic of all of Shakespeare.

It was wonderfully shot, I'll give it that. But there wasn't much there past that. The movie was lacking in emotion and humanity. Everything is so forlorn and cold that it just means nothing. The movie jumped around was very stream of conciliation for my taste. And I don't think it did justice to the characters. They made Lady Macbeth way too sympathetic and took away so much of Macbeth's inner turmoil.
I just really found it quite boring honestly.

Looks very cool, my favorite play. I showed my class the Patrick Stewart version set during WWI, they liked that one a good bit. Very scary depiction of the witches as field nurses.

Did you guys know it is tradition that you cannot refer to the play as "Macbeth" in the theatre? You have to refer to it by another name like "The Scottish Play".

This is what gets my students as well. The Stewart adaptation is the best version of the witches, bar none.
Another good adaptation stars Jason Connery (Sean's son) as Macbeth. The witches are very cheesy, but Connery's Macbeth always maintains that inner conflict. It also has the best prelude to the "Dagger" soliloquy. There is no grasping at an invisible dagger. He enters a chapel on his way to murder Duncan, and the moon coming through the window hits a cross on the altar and casts a shadow on the floor. The shadow? A dagger. Brilliant.

I feel like a surefire way to convince people you are worldly, learned, and highbrow is to disagree with this...but 100%. You have to reread Shakespeare like 5 times to get past the language and get to the meaning. And I cant do that in real time. So the performances lose a lot.

I agree with this. Shakespeare's Macbeth often requires and deserves multiple viewings to acquire the full appreciation. The story is rich, the language is piercing and complex. This Macbeth is not a literal translation.
Upon my head they placed a fruitless crown and put a barren scepter in my grip, hence to be wrenched with an unlineal hand, no son of mine succeeding. If it be so, for Banquo's issue have I filed my mind. For them, the gracious Duncan have I murdered. But rancor is in the vessel of my peace only for them, to make them kings. The seed of Banquo, kings.
What is to be done?
Be innocent of the knowledge, dearest chuck, till thou applaud the deed. How full of scorpions is my mind?
Of course, you still have the famous lines:
So foul and fair a day I have not seen.
and
By the worst means, the worst. For mine own good,
All causes shall give way. I am in blood
Stepped in so far that, should I wade no more,
Returning were as tedious as go o'er.
among others.
