I can almost guarantee that would be the lowest grossing Marvel movie ever.

Yea Marvel should totally just copy the DC formula post-Nolan and just make gritty movies for the sake of making gritty movies. Works 100% of the time.

Their formula is working for them. They're not going to stray from it. GOTG and Winter Soldier were about as far as they were going to stray.

'Dark' and 'gritty' are adjectives that should forever be removed from filmmaking and film discussion. shite has run its course.

I disagree. I enjoy dark and gritty. That being said I know it shouldn't take over the Marvel universe because why they are doing is working.

Don't criticize Marvel films dude. They don't take themselves seriously so just stop.

No it doesn't. They just need to write good stories with good characters and dialogue and people will be happy.

Hey, what happened to the goldennugget thread? I went buy some jeans, but had some fine "TFA sucked" points to defend. Did it turn into a race war?

You can make adult-oriented movies without being purposefully dark and po-faced; if you can't, you get something like BvS.

I do agree that they need to up their game with some more complex films, although they have been doing this with the Netflix shows instead. However...

One does not automatically equal the other in either direction. See BvS for an example of dark and gritty being completely shallow. See Groundhog Day for a comedy with a ton of depth.

It's called quality storytelling. Marvel is falling under the Disney low-risk banner. Disney does not take chances, they were burned a couple of times (Black Cauldron, Hunchback, etc.) and are hesitant to ever do it again.

Honestly, unless they use Infinity War to reset, give us new maybe more complex central characters, then I doubt we see them go beyond a Winter Soldier.

Speaking of, Steve and Tony are both characters with depth, even if the movies don't play to that level, the characters do.

I had this discussion with a cousin the other day. The Marvel movies, outside of 3 or 4, haven't been mind blowingly great.

They've just been solid movies. They don't take too many risks and have a formula to them. A solid story, great visuals, decent humor and average dialogue. But the point is, it makes up a solid movie. It may not be Oscar worthy or groundbreaking, but outside of Iron Man 3, every Marvel movie has been solid entertainment.

That's why they won't stray too far away from their formula, because it works. They don't care about making superhero movies like Batman Begins or TDK. They're OK with putting out solid to average movies that entertain people.

I wouldn't mind seeing the current type of marvel movie with a little blood and tits added.

I do think they are slightly constrained by some of the Heroes as well. They've done a fantastic job with both Steve and Tony, who both offer a lot of depth and can carry a film. Bucky and Loki as villains/heroes have also been well used.

I hope with Black Panther (a legit King) and Captain Marvel (Personality Disorder) they take things a bit further.

This is also why I was pumped for the Inhumans films. The Inhumans are inherently darker, and because they are a "race" of people, there's more room to build broader complexity with their relation to Humans and even other superheroes. Heck, Agents of Shield has not been spectacular, merely good, but the Inhumans stuff does work well there.

It's still considered announced, but given the SHIELD stuff and the success of your Strange's and Ant-Mans, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it is pulled. There has been no meaningful movement on it that I know of.

I think the Inhumans were a fallback if Ant-Man/Strange weren't successful. A placeholder if the Avengers didn't pan out in full. It would give them a fresh start, and a fresh team to use. Strange has now passed Iron Man 2 in Box Office, that's huge. I think we'll see Strange two come after IW Part 2 (whatever title that takes) and continue to see Avenger-type characters.

Or at least I wouldn't be surprised.

The real problem is that they feel like they have to stay true to the source material instead of spicing things up. Why does uncle Ben have to die every time? Why can't he be arrested for child pornography or something darker?

How about instead of Tony Stark being a genius inventor, he just murders innocent people due to an Oedipus complex?

These are the gritty adult stories that marvel is afraid to tell.

Feige pretended to be interested in an Inhumans film as long as he was forced to work with the Marvel board. Once they broke Marvel Studios off on its own, the Inhumans project was dead.

Marvel is making an Inhumans TV series. Marvel Studios won't be touching it.
