Superman is a character that just really doesn't translate to screen well this day in age

Why?

It's because he doesn't have enough flaws. He doesn't have a lot of personal issues for the audience to identify with (other than being an adopted orphan). He's simply too powerful of a super hero. Unless you've got some Kryptonium lying around, Superman is pretty much invincible. You know why people like Batman and Iron Man more than Superman? It's because any one of us, with enough money and dedication could be Batman. He's a mortal, flawed human being. Superman is just hard to identify with because he's so much better than us. He has super strength, lazer vision, he can fly, he's bullet proof, he's handsome, he has pretty much zero character flaws, how are most people supposed to identify with this "perfect" super hero? That person was great for the 1940s and 50s, but today's audience wants a hero they can identify with, someone like them, someone who makes them believe that anyone, even themselves, can be a hero. Yes, we are that narcissistic as a people.

Properly told, People could identify with Superman for reasons other than "I could be like him someday"

OK, so you have this perfect, God-like being that suddenly shows up and solves so many problems. How would we respond? How would the world accept him? Would we get mad when he couldn't save the day all of the time? I think those are some issues that could really yield some dividends in future Superman movies.
