I love the Roku interface. I have a TV, 3 and 4. The apps are proprietary and it is not Android of any flavor (so no Kodi).

Live TV is hit or miss with Roku. If Sling or PS Vue are options (I think both are), then go that way after comparing pros and cons (Sling is cheaper at base, I think, PS Vue is perhaps better as you move up). I was trying a bunch of individual apps to varying degrees of success. I finally got an NVIDIA Shield and it is the workhorse for my streaming/Kodi.

Better than Amazon FireTV box? I the Firestick which has served us quite well after a firmware update a few months ago.

If you are planning on getting PlayStation Vue as your streaming service don't get a Roku. The PS Vue app for it was so bad that I ended up getting a Fire TV. Other than the PS Vue app though, I liked the Roku.

I have a Firestick, not a box. I know it's apples (pardon the pun) and oranges, but as an Amazon fan, I am unimpressed by the Firestick. When the time came to try a powerful Android box, I was open to something else.

Probably overkill if you don't game on it (I don't yet - got it in May), but the Shield is a powerful bit of hardware. I've pretty much moved all my streaming over. I do think that the Roku 4 (which the new one is the Premier+ I guess) does just the slightest bit better job of 4k, but that could also be my imagination.

Not enough, though, particularly with Kodi.

FYI check out the AT&T DIRECTV Now promotion going on right now.

If you buy two months of DTV Now then you get a free Roku Premier. Its instant if you go to a wireless store and you can walk out with the Roku.

They just signed a deal with CBS as well so that will be streaming and cloud DVR is launching 9/1.
