Longstanding Rumor About Who Directed 'Poltergeist' Finally Confirmed

That background led to being flat out asked on the podcast who “really” directed Poltergeist. Tobe Hooper (The Texas Chains Saw Massacre, Lifeforce) is listed as the person that helmed the film, but the style of the movie has fostered suspicions that Poltergeist producer/writer Steven Spielberg was who was really in control. Leonetti was happy to reflect on his time on the set and share his insight.

“Hooper was so nice and just happy to be there,” explained Leonetti. “He creatively had input. Steven developed the movie, and it was his to direct, except there was anticipation of a director’s strike, so he was “the producer” but really he directed it in case there was going to be a strike and Tobe was cool with that. It wasn’t anything against Tobe. Every once in a while, he would actually leave the set and let Tobe do a few things just because. But really, Steven directed it.”

this may be the worst kept secret in Hollywood history
TCM is possibly my favorite horror movie ever, but Tobe Hooper was a pretty shitastic director otherwise
i never felt he had the ability to craft Poltergeist

I never knew this was a thing. Interesting though.
So this is saying that SS directed it? I wonder if Universal will try to sue him for breach of contract.

Smart move on Hooper's part though. He gets an easy paycheck and he gets in Spielberg's good graces.

I don't think there's any law that says a producer or other person can't do directorial things, even if it's the bulk of them. The term "producer" is pretty flexible. Some of them are credited because they invested money on the film, or gave someone a BJ. Some have great creative control. I really don't think there's a lot of actionable offense here, especially after 35 years, and who would want to take issue with it? He's very powerful and the movie is an all-time classic.

One could even argue that TCM was a shitastic film, too. The material just happened to benefit from shitastic direction.

The Funhouse is a very underrated horror movie and probably Hooper's best post TCM.

There's also the fat Tobe Hooper had a pretty large drug habit at this point, and wasn't capable of managing a large project.
But this is the worst kept secret in Hollywood. I mean, look at all the offers Hooper got to direct after Poltergeist's success.... a whole lot of nothing. Word got out.

He didn't help his cause by following up Poltergeist with two expensive flops in Lifeforce and Invaders From Mars.
Then when he made Texas Chain Saw Massacre 2 he apparently went against the financial backers wishes who wanted a straight up horror film and instead made a black comedy.
Can't piss off the people who holds the keys to the bank.

He did a fantastic job with Salem's Lot

To this day I don't get why Spielberg just doesn't come out and say that he really directed it. It's one of the best horror movies ever made...own that shite, dude.

The director's guild would probably throw a fit. They have strict rules over who gets credited as director and they don't like people messing with their system.

Plus, he doesn't really have to. His status is pretty set without having to openly belittle another director while unnecessarily taking credit.

i believe, also a Cannon project
basically he went for the biggest paycheck (which was ironically Cannon) and had no career afterward
