Would Gus have allowed Spoon to live? Before Jake put the spurs into the horse, it seemed as though Gus was contemplating his fate and possibly thinking of letting him go. And his conversation afterwards with Newt implies such. I know, for fact, Call would have let him swing and tried not to get blood on his boots. But Gus was the only man that could negotiate with Call, and Gus was the executioner that day.

Very powerful scene in a movie full of em. Also, the guy that played Dan (type of fella it's a pleasure to hang) plays a great drunk/villain.

"Well, adios, boys..." If you can't feel a little for Spoon at that point then you're as tough as the leather on Call ' s boots.

He wasn't reconsidering at all. He seemed pretty resolute/down to business when Jake was pleading with him prior to them getting strung up. His reaction afterwards was sad. Knew it was the right thing to do, Jake had crossed the line, but they were old friends.

Isn't Gus' line "yeah, he died fine"?

Yep. Gus had a way with graveside words. I just suppose his conversation later on with Newt after they were back on the trail implied he didn't think Jake should have swung. Maybe I'm wrong. Gus probably knew all along that Jake would eventually swing, he just never thought he'd be the one to have to do it.

"A man that'll go along with five Killin' s is taking his leaving awful slow."

Enough said there.

Never any doubt from Gus in my opinion. He knew Jake had to hang.

In his own way Gus was just as down to business as Call when it counted. Sometimes his humor and philosophical outlook masked it but ole Gus put down a ton of outlaws and Indians during the course of the show.

As an aside, I thought Urich's Jake Spoon was one of the weaker performances in a show filled with tons of sterling work.

The title isn't a spoiler or anything.

Reading the book right now and didn't know this was gonna happen. Sweet.

Sorry.

He's identified as tragically flawed from the beginning. McMurtry alludes to his luck eventually running out. You should easily deduce that. Don't worry, by the end of the book you won't be thinking about Jake Spoon dying....

great book, great movie, hope you like both.

It's been so long I'd forgotten. Now I'm inspired to revisit.

Now I am confused.

Was Jake Spoon the guy that Newt took a likin' too and thought was cool? Or did he attach to Dish?

I thought Jake Spoon was the guy who stayed with Lorena when the drive was over.

Pectus,

Jake Spoon was the rake and rambler that rode into Lonesome Dove at the beginning with Deets. He had accidentally shot July Johnsons brother in a bar altercation in Arkansas, and was running for his life. His luck led him to Deets.

He was a former Ranger with McCrae and Call, but never as skilled as them...as the book states, he was lucky on a number of times to not have been killed. Newt had known him when he was just a young boy and I believe he took a liking to him immediately upon his return to LD because he believed that he might be his Pa. Newt's ma was a whore that had passed long before.

As Gus stated to Call and Spoon at the beginning , most likely one of them was his dad. Spoon WAS the impetus for the cattle drive. His smooth talking ways inspired Call to think of the glory of leading a cattle drive to Montana. He did convince Lorena to come along on the drive as well, but by the time the noose was around his neck he had forgotten who she was.

Dish was top hand on the drive. He did truly live Lorena but it was unrequited. He did leave Montana at the end to head back to Nebraska to Clara' s house to try and win over Lorena, but in my head I doubt she ever let him get a shot at the honey hole.

Hope this helps.

Good summary.

About Lorena: I think it was revealed in later books ...

(SPOILERS SO ANYBODY WHO DON'T WANT TO KNOW QUIT READING)

... that Lorena actually married Pie Eyed Pete. Now that never made much sense to me cause in the show she was way out of Pete's league. But I'm pretty sure that's what later books indicate. So yeah, ole Dish was out of luck.

I Didn't know that! I only read LD. Yea the actor they cast to play Pea Eye would never in 40 cattle drives have a shot at Diane Lane!

And yes Dish, while a hoss hand on a cattle drive, never had a shot. She never really even wanted to turn one for him for money when she was a whore. Guess some dudes get put in the friend zone (or non), whether the woman is a whore or not.

A whore was lucky to find anyone who would marry her. They had a hard life and most of them died young of disease, alcohol/drugs, or physical abuse. Pretty much like today.

Jake was kind of a dick there.

Gus said "you might want to know I got Lori back"

Jake said "who"

One of my favorite lines in the movie

Yea it pretty much just goes to show you he had been with many a whore to the point he couldn't remember one from the other.

It actually hit Gus pretty hard when Jake spurred that horse.

Great scene and great line.

I believe that same actor was a drunkard/quasi bad guy in a Superman movie. He nailed the role of Dan in LD.

He was the only person they encountered on the drive that died and didn't get buried, if I remember correctly. McCrae and Call knew how to send a message.
