I watched this movie for the first time ever Saturday. Where in the hell did they get that story . I read the book in the early 90s and was shocked how the plot of the book and movie are so dissimilar. That book shocked the hell out of me - some of the scenes still give me the heebs - so I know I am remembering the book correctly.

I thought the movie was awful - Robert Downey Jr was incredible, as he always is. oh and James Spader was great!

Aside from Downey, a below-par film.

I prefer Bright Lights Big City to Less Than Zero. Somewhat similar movie.

RDJ's cocaine scenes in that movie HAD to be real!

They were just too dead on to be acting.

Because the novel didn't have a central plot or a core set of protagonists, but was more a set of interwoven events happening to a larger group of friends, this film differs considerably from the novel. In a surreal twist, the sequel novel, 'Imperial Bedrooms', has the original novel's characters aware of the film version of "Less Than Zero".

This movie had nothing in common with the novel; other than the names of the characters and that it was set in LA during Christmas. Nothing that happened in the book happened in the movie and vice versa.

I understand that things need to be tweaked when adapting a novel into a movie, but this was just wrong...
