re: Leah Remini's Scientology documentary on A&E

The bottom line is that you should never have to ESCAPE from your church. There's little doubt that it's nothing more than a tax shelter uber-scam. The guys at South Park started to tip the fridge over when they blew the doors off the ridiculousness of the Xenu thing in that Tom Cruise "Trapped in the Closet" episode.
Francis Ford Coppola saw what LRH was doing with Scientology and tried to get George Lucas to do the same thing with Star Wars.

I don't think it's the brightest idea for the church to be attacking Leah Remini. Unlike others who left (or escaped, depending on perspective) Scientology, she actually has resources to fight back, she's prolific enough to get public sympathy/support, and not to mention she clearly doesn't GAF what the church says about her. Hopefully the church has finally faced a formidable enough opponent in Remini.
Does this series have a set number of episodes, or does A&E plan to take this as far as they can? I've watched every episode so far....I suppose "enjoying" isn't the right word, but the show has definitely grabbed my attention.

Ep. 7, tonight, is listed as the "season finale".

And the final episode concludes with:
"To be continued..."

I didn't notice that, but my DVR says there's another new ep next week...perhaps it's "Part 2" of tonight's ep? And "season finale" instead of "series finale", could that imply maybe there's another season in the works?

Then you will love the dress she wears in tonight's episode.

I hope they go as many seasons as it takes to get these manipulative fricks' tax exemption stripped from them. Hubbard openly said he was looking for a way to skip out on income taxes. There's no doubt that Miscavige Littlefingered his way to the top, with LRH's health failing prior to his death.

I'm down with that. All of the assets get put into social security or medicaid/medicare. That should put a small dent in things.

It's a televised Reddit AMA

She looks good but her hands/fingernails freak me out..just sayin

Next week's "episode" will be on her 2nd Reddit AMA. It's an add-on, not a pre-produced episode. Maybe she'll update us on the legal situation and whether there will be a season 2. I'm not sure there needs to be one but if they have the audience and the former Scientologists to fill the time sharing their experiences, I'll watch.
Here's a link to her first Reddit AMA:
I am Leah Remini, Ask Me Anything about Scientology

Our pet theory is that she keeps those nails like that just in case she has to defend herself against some paid heavy from the church tries to shove her in the back of a van and cart her off to The Hole.
Having seen Going Clear after the first few episodes of this show, I'd say they complement each other pretty well. Leah's show does a good job of fleshing out the dramatis personae that Going Clear introduces from 30,000 feet.
I did find it interesting that Remini's show hasn't spoken at length about Travolta's involvement (especially in light of his son's death), but they do put crosshairs squarely on Tom Cruise. To that end - if you didn't know better, you'd think that Cruise and LR are/were the only celebrities in the church.
Even Going Clear only interviewed Spanky Taylor, who was Travolta's handler back in the day, till they apprehended her following an escape attempt.
What I find to be mind boggling is how they can legally get away with traveling to nab someone who's blown and take them back to wherever the frick they're squirreling folks away who escape. The semantic leap of making someone sign documents that waive their individual rights as a citizen in the name of freedom of religion is sickening.
Not to mention there's a gigantic paradox at stake when you claim a parishioner is expressing freedom of religion by "willfully" signing documents that waive and often violate every other Constitutional right they have that would protect themselves from the God-awful practices of the very church they claim to worship. Literally every single facet of this "church" is a fraud.
I imagine that 99% of the awful stuff that goes on in this organization since LRH's death and likely a good bit before, are Miscavige's personal machinations, warping the entire organization into his person instrument of destruction.

Yeah - Coppola is a crass opportunist. "George, you're making all this money with merchandising, but it would be petty cash compared to what you could do with 'The Force' as a real religion." And, this was during the time Coppola was drowing in money problems related to Apocalypse Now!

This is the biggest issue of all. No other church...hell.even other cults don't require you to sign contracts like these. They literally haND over total control of their lives and families with these Contracts.

Thanks for clarifying. I did see the first Reddit special, but I got a little distracted near the end of last night's ep, so I didn't realize next week was part 2 of Reddit...with the "To be continued" at the end of last night, I was kinda hoping we'd see the outcome of the lawyer meeting(s).
I don't know what kind of ratings this show is getting, but it seems like enough people are talking about it anyway.
I kinda remember Bill Burr talking about Scientology on one of his podcasts...he thought he was attending a support group of some sort, and it soon dawned on him it was actually a Scientology recruiting front, so he bailed after he connected the dots...fortunately, he left early enough where it was a "no harm, no foul" situation, and no one was gonna bother him afterward

not being able to figure out how it's a religion. I still don't get that part.
Yeah, that still does not make sense to me either.

What is crazy is how their Sea Org contracts they make Sea Org recruits sign is for a BILLION years.
Also crazy is how parents in Scientology let their minor children join the Sea Org. They basically hand over their children at 14-15 years old to the Scientology church to do what they want with them.

I thought they said it was a trillion years, not a billion, but I could be wrong. Either way I doubt that it's a contract that could be enforceable in a court of law. (I'm no lawyer.)
As far as it being a religion, it believes in the concept of an eternal soul and promotes an ideology that is supposed to make your life and the rest of the world better. Every religion operates to tell people how to behave and includes some element of mysticism. Cult or religion, there's not much difference other than longevity and enrollment.
