My problem with many of these guys has nothign to do with their history or upbringing and everythign to do with them just being lazy, short sighted individuals. And that's not a black/white thing or a class thing. Most of them CONSTANTLY fantasize and talk about getting paid, making the league and getting cash money, etc. So, a normal person's thought process would be:

"What do I want in life?"
-Money, fame, women, cars, etc. To get that, I need...
-To get noticed at a big football school. For that i need...
-To do well here and get those offers. For that I need...
-to stay eligible so I can see the field at all. For that I need...
-to go to class, not flunk out, and make Cs

All their dreams and everythign they want in life..it all starts with simply going to class and making a tiny bit of effort in the classroom. And some of these guys can't even be bothered to do that.

Again, it's not a "poor black kid with no upbringing" thing, it's a "use your brain and THINK for ONE MINUTE about your life" thing, and go from there.

Its called common sense. Not upbringing. And I agree.

It does not take upbringing to make good decisions and be respectful. Life teaches us that

But that's part of their upbringing. And calling them lazy is unfair. They bust their arse on the practice field and weight room, for the most part. They're lazy when it comes to school because nobody in their life has held them accountable for their school work, including the high schools they attended.

After they've been told for 10+ years how talented they were and how much $$ they were going to make in the NFL. Sure, someone should have sat them down when they were 13 ro 14 and told them they needed to take school seriously, but for most of them nobody did, or nobody held them accountable because they were needed on the football field.

which goes out the window at this stage. In HS they probably didn't have adult authority figures to guide them, so why should they put forth effort? But that's in the past. Now it's go time...they have a hardass football coach telling them to go to class, they have tutors to help them study, and they have an academic advisor who tells them exactly when their classes are, how many they can miss, when they have assignments, and even coaches them up with practice questions before the exams. At this point, there's no need for them to be flunking out of school, regardless of their upbringing.

Well, they're still lazy in the other half. I mean, all any of them want is to GTFO of community college. To do that they have to play good ball, and don't flunk. Them going hard in practice is great but neglecting the other 50% of the equation is still lazy.

quote:

Right, and like I said above that is irreleavnt since they now have more help and guidance than most normal students get at great colleges.

quote:

After they've been told for 10+ years how talented they were and how much $$ they were going to make in the NFL

and now they're at a crap school in scooba Mississippi. If that's not a wakeup call that they have made some questionable choices up to now and they need to fix their path, I don't know what is.

quote:

which again is irrelvant to the right here and now. All that matters now is 1)play football well 2)maintain a C average.

That's it. All the $$$ they want, it starts by simply going to class. And some of them can't even be bothered to do that. It's a choice that they, as 18-20 year old young adults, make on their own. Not because they didn't have a parent in the picture during childhood.

I guess my point is the old saying that old habits die hard. Having the expectation for them to suddenly change their behavior is unrealistic, which is why these places have people like Brittany in place, and the SEC schools have massive academic support staffs. For some, the light comes on and they take it seriously, for others it never will and they'll flame out and regret it the rest of their lives.

I wanted to slap Buddy so hard when they ended on that BS of him recruiting about "the focus being on degrees" etc. Dude is a real POS based on what I saw in this show

I guess they are making a 2nd season of this show. Sounds like they want to follow DJ Law around UAB some this season for an update

Just now finishing the last episode. John Franklin reminds me of Namond from the Wire.

Overall he is just a cocky kid but he is all right. I think he was pretending to be hard and it comes off as really fake. Really easy to tell who is hard when he standing next to a guy like DJ law who is one step away from the projects.

The coach is a dick and i need more Isiah Wright in my life

Clint Trickett is absolutely banging "mit" Wagner

I like Marcus Wood and think he'll make a good head coach.

I normally don't care for southern fundamentalist bible-thumpers, but he always makes a practical application to his "bible lessons" and does not seem to be trying to convert the players.

Once again, it is odd that Marcus has been named "Head Coach in Waiting." It makes me believe that the university president/AD has let Buddy know this coming season will be his last.

And I think Buddy is genuine, though volatile. And while it wasn't that big a deal, that "a-hole" anecdote was inappropriate for after-dinner speaking at the local rotary club.

While the show only gave us that glimpse of him reaching for the hypodermic in the fridge, Buddy is obviously a type-1 diabetic who takes insulin. I hope, with his temper and as high-strung as he is, that he doesn't have high blood pressure.

Hmmmm

-I like it because we get to see guys we're familiar with still in the program and get some followup from how last year ended. And more Ms Wagner :)
-Don't really like it because we've alrady seen it. Buddy will probably say he's changed and be all calm..until games then he'll just be shouting and cussing. They'll still run up the score on people. Kids still won't go to class, etc.

I'm not complianing though, I'll stillw atch.

when does it come out? I'm assuming not for a while since they have to wait for hte season .

I think there will be plenty interesting fresh drama.

Their starting qb will be De'Andre Johnson, the guy dismissed from Florida State for striking a woman in a bar.

That is reprehensible, but I am all for second chances, if the guys take advantage of them.

I'd love to make a game, but the jucos play on Thursday nights and it will be challenging to try and travel that far on a work night.

Isiah Wright was my favorite too. He always had a smile on his face and seemed to really appreciate his opportunity.

He will be at Temple this year and being from Philly, I'm pumped about that.

I don't have high hopes for season 2. This season wouldn't have been nearly as memorable without the brawl. That production company really hit the jackpot. I'd love to see some footage of the crew in the editing room when they realized exactly what they had captured on film, and how it completely altered the story they had planned to tell. Talk about right place at the right time.
