I think I read one time that Heigl expressed interest in returning to Grey's Anatomy, and the Grey's Anatomy people were basically like..."nah, we're cool. Take care now."
ETA: I found the quote from Shonda Rhimes when asked about bringing Heigl's character back: "I'm done with that story."

She must have seriously pissed off Rhimes when she left so that Rhimes was basically like "frick you" when Heigl came crawling back wanting to be back. Also...if she really is a bitch like they say...the other cast members likely didn't want her back as well.
Rhimes has already shown that if she is pissed at you...she will give you a horrible way off the show(look what happened with Derek Shepherd)

As a chick...I'm a sucker for all of Rhimes' shows. They are my guilty pleasure tv. But yeah...I would imagine Shonda Rhimes is a massive bitch herself IRL. I always try to just watch her shows for entertainment and try to ignore all the hidden agenda current issues she tries to pound into her viewers with her tv shows.

I've heard that Greys is the most preachiest of her shows as its chock full of her political viewpoints.
Also heard Scandal is the most thrilling of them all as it has very entertaining twists that just completely fricks over people.
How to get away with murder is just a glorified soap opera.

Rhimes admitted publicly on The Nightly Show that she has definitely killed characters off in her shows because she didn't like that actor. So I think a lot of people assumed it had to do with him because of the way it went down. Dempsey isn't the kind of guy who is going to come out and really give any hint to any issues, so it's hard to judge from his responses because they're pretty cookie cutter when he's asked about it.
I actually think what she did to Heigl's character on the show was worse than a death. She just kind of wrote her off the screen and refuses to bring her back. All I know is from all accounts from people who have worked with both, they're both massive bitches that deserve each other.
