ETA:

Unfortunately, some scenes have been leaked. Be careful if you don't want it spoiled.

‘Joker’ Wins Top Prize at Venice Film Festival

In a pretty shocking move, the Venice Film Festival’s top award—the Golden Lion—went to director Todd Phillips’ already polarizing DC Comics adaptation Joker. The film is loosely based on the DC villain of the same name, with the Hangover and War Dogs director crafting an original origin story about an aspiring (yet failed) stand-up comedian named Arthur Fleck. Joaquin Phoenix has drawn raves for his performance, but the first reviews out of Venice were divisive to say the least, with some going so far as to say the film itself is literally dangerous.

#JokerMovie is an efficacious & disturbing film that's equally meritorious & tragic. Phoenix's roaring, monstrous performance as the Clown of Crime is so immaculate, so maestoso, it's a prodigious accomplishment, and marks the apex of his already superlative career. #Venezia76

Todd Phillips crafts an audacious & compelling portrait of the disintegration of a man full of ennui, driven to unthinkable extremes, with inspiration from classics like ‘Taxi Driver’, both featuring men whose mental instability drove them to ambiguous extremes. #Joker #Venezia76

#JokerMovie is the type of film that defines an actor's career, type of role & character that comes once in a lifetime. Heath Ledger's #Joker redefined the character, but Phoenix cements it as one of the greatest, darkest villains in cinematic history. All hail Joaquin Phoenix!

There will be before Joker. And there will be after Joker. I don't know if the world is ready for this movie. Or maybe it is? It is GNARLY. It is crazy. It is audacious. It doesn't hold back. Wow. I can't believe it exists. But it does. And it's coming.

I can’t quite believe how good Joker is. It’s a masterpiece. Funny, dark, beautiful, full of rage, and really fricking cool. Joaquin Phoenix is masterful and every shot is sublime. #Venezia76

filed my review of JOKER (embargo is 1:15pm EST).

now to just close my computer, take a deep breath, and never look at the internet again.

(sentiment less about the movie being good or bad and more about how the discourse around it will drag us all down to hellllllll)

“Bring in the clowns!!!” ?? #Joker will surprise the hell out of people. Dark, twisted, brutal origin story of the most recognised villain in popular culture. Joaquin Phoenix adds another iconic performance to his extraordinary career #Venezia76

The problem with all the previous cinematic depictions of the Joker, is that they were never quite dark enough. Categorically not a problem for @jokermovie - fans of Killing Joke and Arkham Asylum will love this. It’s also brilliant! #Venice76

#Joker is a masterpiece. It's frickED UP. This film is sinister and uncomfortable in the best way; I'm actually just shocked it exists... This is a DC film. And it is DARK AND DISTURBING. I am in pure awe and I'm actually delirious. I was not at all expecting that... #Venezia76

Where are all the takes on Joker from women who saw it in Venice? I'm seeing a lot of raves from dudes but I need a little female perspective here!

Can’t say too much because the embargo is on until tonight but I’m personally not enamoured with it. Can’t deny it’s aesthetic achievement or Joaquin’s performance but there’s equally a lot wrong with it.

The movie may be great but at this over the top review. This sounds like something you'd read about an actor in a Shakespearean play.

This is why I hate critics. You shouldn’t be knee deep in a thesaurus for an hour before writing your review.

Agreed. I dunno how you top being Cash or Commodus alone to make this statement.

As I’ve said though. JP always brings it.

One of the best trailers I've ever seen. It's terrifying. Glad to hear the movie is going to live up to expectations.

Can a movie like this win Oscars? I'd love to see Joaquin finally get his Oscar for this.

Only a couple of these write for established or respected publishers and websites.

And all "first reactions" at festivals should be suspect, good or bad. It's like having a beer at the brewery. It always tastes better when you're sitting there, enjoying the atmosphere, and sometimes chatting with the employees that made it. A room full of critics excited to be there, producers excited to sell their movies, and rich people there to look rich can create an echo chamber that quickly feeds off itself and grows to hyperbolic levels.

I'm expecting mixed reviews. Something like 60% tomato score. I think foreign critics will like it more than american critics. A lot of the fanboy sites have been hating on this movie for months now.

The fact that the embargo is ending over a month before release is a really good sign in itself tbh.
