Just finished book #2 (Half The World) and really can't recommend it enough. Book #3 (Half a War) Releases July 28th.

quote:

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY TIME AND THE WASHINGTON POST • LOCUS AWARD WINNER

“A fast-paced tale of betrayal and revenge that grabbed me from page 1 and refused to let go.”—George R. R. Martin

quote:

“Half a King is my favorite book by Joe Abercrombie so far, and that’s saying something.”—Patrick Rothfuss

quote:

“As in all Abercrombie’s books, friends turn out to be enemies, enemies turn out to be friends; the line between good and evil is murky indeed; and nothing goes quite as we expect. With eye-popping plot twists and rollicking good action, Half a King is definitely a full adventure.”—Rick Riordan

quote:

Enthralling! An up-all-night read.”—Robin Hobb

“Polished and sharp, perhaps his most technically proficient novel yet . . . I dare you to read the first chapter and try not to turn the next page.”—Brent Weeks

For some reason they are listed as "Young Adult Fantasy", I didn't get that from these books at all beyond the main characters being young.

that's the only reason i haven't checked these out yet. I love Abercrombie's other stuff. Is it comparable to his previous books?

Abercrombie has been recommended time and again on this board and is considered one of the preeminent fantasy writers today, but I haven't been able to get into him. I tried the Blade Itself and it just didn't grab me. Of course, neither has Brandon Sanderson and it took me forever to get into Steven Erikson, so maybe I just need to give him more of a shot.

Or maybe a different series of Abercrombie's is for me. Like this one.

Haven't read any of his other stuff yet, but these books, so far, are tremendous. Perfectly paced with compelling characters.

Maybe Patrick Rothfuss can answer your question?

Can't speak to the rest (as stated in my previous post), but Half a King was a tremendous read and Half the World was even better IMHO. The pacing was better than Sanderson and the world building was much more cohesive than Erikson.

I completely agree with OP. Great series so far and I guess just because there is no sex and no f-bombs like in his previous it's considered young adult

Highly recommended and I can't wait for the 3rd one to come out.

Same thing here. I've read all of his other books and really liked them (even though I was getting depressed reading them after a bit).

I hadn't read this one because I thought it was for tweens.

No graphic sex anyway, but still some sex in Half the World, and pretty damn graphic violence throughout but still considered YA. Makes no sense to me, but glad I ignored that anyway.

I just finished The Blade Itself.

It was a slow starter and I really didn't feel any connection to any of the characters. Then, around a quarter of the way through it was almost like he changed styles, and the story took off.

Overall, I liked it and I'm looking forward to the next two.

But, I will read the 3rd Blood Raven first.

If GRRM likes it, it must at least have nudity and very descriptive scenes involving food.

I'm in.

I know it's considered YA but I'd say it's grittier than something like LoTR, Hobbit, etc.

Easily. Minus some language it's about as dark as Brent Weeks Night Angel Trilogy.

The Way of Shadows is pretty... um... disturbing in parts.

Quick synopsis?

From the publisher:

quote:

“I swore an oath to avenge the death of my father. I may be half a man, but I swore a whole oath.”

Prince Yarvi has vowed to regain a throne he never wanted. But first he must survive cruelty, chains, and the bitter waters of the Shattered Sea. And he must do it all with only one good hand.

The deceived will become the deceiver.

Born a weakling in the eyes of his father, Yarvi is alone in a world where a strong arm and a cold heart rule. He cannot grip a shield or swing an axe, so he must sharpen his mind to a deadly edge.

The betrayed will become the betrayer.

Gathering a strange fellowship of the outcast and the lost, he finds they can do more to help him become the man he needs to be than any court of nobles could.

Will the usurped become the usurper?

But even with loyal friends at his side, Yarvi finds that his path may end as it began—in twists, and traps, and tragedy.

It takes place in a viking-like culture and is much more sword and little to no sorcery. The story of the main character in the first book reads almost like the origin of Littlefinger. He is no warrior in a society of warriors, so his mind is his greatest weapon.

There's plenty of slavery and bondage, if that makes you feel better.
