It's Time For Will Ferrell To Pivot

His last few movies have been pretty terrible and he's basically played the same character for 20 yrs now. He can't really sell a movie alone anymore hence the teaming up with Whalberg and Kevin Hart recently.
It's time for him to pull the Bill Murray career pivot and move to more dramatic/unique stuff. Murray had kind of burnt out his first career persona by the mid 90s… then… boom… Rushmore, and then Lost in Translation (which still pisses me off that movie didn't win Oscars). Then Murray was off, and has continued the 2nd phase of his career and created an almost legendary persona now.
Farrell might not be able to do this as he is not nearly as good a dramatic actor as Murray and seems far too much of a political left wing nut who wants hollywood to like him. But I think this is really his only move at this point to really pump some life into his movies again.
… It's got to be a better idea than making fun of Reagan's Alzheimer's right?

Will Ferrell is no Bill Murray though. He would probably be the 1st to admit that too. He does better with cameos and supporting roles.

I enjoyed Daddy's Home. Probably my favorite he has been in since Step Bros.

Did you see Everything Must Go?

He needs to keep making Lifetime movies

I'll give him a shot, but only if he can pull off the fricking Catalina wine mixer

And that is not a knock on Will Ferrell, there are plenty of actors who've had great careers as supporting actors. Not everyone can headline a movie for decades.

He tried that with Stranger than Fiction and Everything Must Go.
People just want the funny.

Most of the great comedic actors turn to crap these days. This use to not be the case. Movies in general tend to suck more often then not lately.

I somewhat liked both those movies.
Many people really like Everything Must Go

Comedians have a short shelf life. At some point, you lose your feeling for the pulse of society and you lose your edge.
Face it, jokes about carpooling and changing diapers aren't that funny.

I know it was a light hearted movie, but I think Elf was one of his best performances. He actually played the character and not himself.

You have to transition to drama at some point if you want to keep your career going, like Tom Hanks, and Robin Williams did in the past and Jonah Hill and James Franco are doing currently. Look at Jim Carrey's career today. No one cares about him anymore. Somehow Adam Sandler has defied this. I don't understand his lasting appeal.

The only movie I like him in.

I don't know if people are hesitant to telling Sandler he just isn't funny anymore or if he has so much money he can make whatever dumb movie with all his buddies he wants. I actually really liked Funny People although I'm in the minority on that one

I like his movies. They are what they are. He's not trying to be a comedic genius.

Yeah, but I think he'd like to keep his career going for another 20 yrs. Maybe he can keep making the same kinds of comedies, who knows...or maybe Murray is just a unicorn and has really pulled off something no one else can.
As a previous poster said, Hanks and Robin Williams did it, but Hanks wasn't a real comic, just a good comedic actor, and Williams was Julliard trained and admitted he was really just a dramatic actor who fell into comedy(it was well known he stole jokes and had others right his stand up). I guess Murray is just that talented.

Murray's pivot included the genius of Wes Anderson
Ferrell seems stuck on Adam MacKay and his minions

Robin Williams was also one of the best improv guys ever.
I wouldn't mind seeing Hanks do some comedy again.
I made this same thread like 9 years ago when this board was in its infancy about Eddie Murphy after he killed in Dreamgirls.
