So many films shot in New Orleans and Louisiana... and this ultimate NOLA book is still not represented.

And that's a shame.

Agree to an extent, but I am just not sure a film adaptation can deliver just how strong a story this is. I think artistically the Director(s) would have to take one direction and roll with it which would alienate a lot of people regardless of which direction they choose. I would definitely go see it just not sure that it would be fair to condense it into a 2 hour movie.
Perhaps a mini-series on one of the streaming sites BASED on the book? That could be interesting...

Aside from all the yuks of the New Orleans characters and Yat talk, the book succeeds at taking you inside the mind of an extremely eccentric character as he spirals out, basically grasping for a reason not to commit suicide. Tough to do that on film in a way that does justice to the humor.

In 1982, Harold Ramis was to write and direct an adaptation, starring John Belushi and Richard Pryor, but Belushi's death prevented this. Later, John Candy and Chris Farley were touted for the lead
These might have been good.

Director John Waters was interested in directing an adaptation starring Divine as Ignatius.
Holy shite, that would have been horrible. John Waters is the naked emperor. His movies just aren't very good.

John Goodman, a longtime resident of New Orleans, was slated to play Ignatius at one point.
Someone tell this guy to stop usurping everything that has anything to do with New Orleans. He hasn't been funny in 20 years.

I agree with this. His being the voice of New Orleans got old fast.

This novel is third on the "unfilmable" books list behind Ubik and Don Quixote.

I picture Patton Oswalt as Ignatius Reilly... hasn't he done a similar role?

I don't think it can be done, so much of the humor is in the writing. Maybe the Coen brothers could pull it off. It's hard to picture the right tone to have on film.

I want to say I heard about a potential stage version with Nick Offerman once.
