lol, he's a great actor with more range than any I've seen. He is one of the few actors that makes a movie better by being in it.

to even be talked about in the same sentence with Jimmy Stewart is high praise and that is moreso the type that he fits instead of Cary Grant, IMO. Cary Grant had a great movie star personality, but it was pretty much one dimensional. Hanks plays an "everyman" in most of his roles and does it very well.
But just to be compared to the greats of that era; Stewart, Grant then you are in the same league others, Gary Cooper, Clark Gable, Spencer Tracey, Jimmy Cagney, etc... Some pretty fine company

If we're talking strictly, lead actor, modern era - perhaps - that 10-year run from 1992 to 2002 is pretty impressive for a lead actor.
However, of all time? Tough. Like many lead actors, Hanks often plays a variant of himself - which is not a criticism - it is what he gets paid for. Many people thought John Wayne couldn't act - but he was never asked to - he was paid well to be John Wayne.
But, GOAT - now you're talking against lead guys like Bogie, Stewart, Cagney (although he was a character guy/villain, a bunch), Tracy, Peck, Lancaster, Holden, Burton, Olivier (ETA: Cooper, Gable) - just a $hit ton of guys from the golden era who could act their socks off. Then you get to Brando, Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffman, Deniro.
GOAT is a big order to fill in this category. Pushed up against the wall, with a gun to my head, I probably say Spencer Tracy, but on a given day it could just as easily be Bogie or Holden.
And if you throw character actors who had the occasional lead role? Jack Lemmon and Philip Seymour Hoffman probably top any list.

Haven't seen enough Streep movies to form an opinion of her, but I'd have a tough time choosing between Hanks, Stewart and Deniro.

Streep has that likeability like Hanks. Plus she has a unique sex appeal that is soft and vulnerable, pretty but not gorgeous. Only a few actresses have that rare combo. Additionally, she is just an outstanding actor who can transform herself into any role. She plays strong, weak, good, bad, heroine, villain, all-American, foreign accent, etc., all with equal mastery.

Agreed. I still think there's an objective value to make, ie Someone like Brando or Kinski whose personality disappears in roles compared to others. But that's the value I would put onto roles, some may see that value differently.
