Those are really poor comparisons.

I think casting really did this movie in. Unfortunately nobody is going to take a movie like this seriously when they don't see a serious actor in it. If you aren't going to have a major actor you better be able to generate some sort of buzz or have a loyal following.

And there is a difference between a movie having a lot of CGI, and then one having so much that that's basically all that is going on.

A movie like this, which I think is an adventure movie set in space, probably wouldn't be made at all without CGI. It's not that they made a movie with too much CGI, but the movie was made because of CGI.

Yeah it's integral to the film's existence.

I don't think the CGI has anything to do with it failing. After hearing about the movie, I checked into the French graphic novels (I'd say "comic books", but they're marketed at an older audience than our US comics used to be).

The stories are VERY good, and visually spectacular. Like a couple people said, 5th Element was basically inspired by the source material, and Besson has said he's always wanted to bring this to the big screen, he just couldn't until now.

The casting director for this movie should never be able to find another job in Hollywood

The movie was made in France, not here. That might be part of the casting failure, as they picked basically a Euro pansy instead of someone more rugged or masculine.
I read that a lot of people thought they were kids (maybe a newer Shark Boy and Lava Girl type of film)... they're supposed to be adults. Clear miss on that part. I don't even think you'd need a big name, but at least give us someone who's recognizably a man, not a boy.

Casting was a critical part, but I'd say marketing is as bad, and Besson should hang both the marketing and casting people.

If the story is well-known and loved in Europe, it should have been released there first, and let it build momentum. I think we'd have been interested if it was viewed as a foreign film that was getting rave reviews, instead of popping up here unknown.

But the trailers were horrendous. They provided almost no context for the plot and no context for the characters, and attaching "based on the groundbreaking graphic novel" to it did nothing for an audience that had never heard of the book before and could not figure out anything more about the story based on that reference. Once again the marketing sank a movie that was a real attempt at creating something unique on screen.

This is closer to what turned me off.

I am of the opinion that the marketing done for The 5th Element was brilliant. They knew the movie was gonna be too "out there" for a traditional mainstream audience - So the poster/trailer baited the hook brilliantly.

The movie poster...something familiar about it:

The trailers for 5th element gave the viewer:
- A proven hero (Bruce the grizzled cab driver? no - an ACTION cab driver) as well as an intriguing damsel in distress.
- The obvious sci-fi was balanced by the familiarity of someRaiders of the Lost Ark-style clips (and nobody doesn't like Raiders)
- There are a few brief glimpses into true majesty of the entire world this story takes place in... not in a constant barrage of rapid flashes...but slowly opened doors that still didn't give the viewer enough to fully grasp what they are seeing.

This 5th Element trailer doesn't show all it's cards

Valerian has too much going on too quickly. The leads...yikes. If they aren't "familiar"... they need to "look the part"... at the very least seem LIKEABLE. I don't get any sense of that watching the trailers.

Honestly, I thought that was kind of what was going on here when I casually so the previews.

I'm by no means a film prognosticator but it wasn't shocking to me that this movie didn't do well.

Ditto. Too many CGI backgrounds, and I'm out.

My basic rule on CGI is this: if you are using CGI to take the place of something that could be done with makeup, extras, props, stunts, or a real location, then its bad CGI.

I get that Valerian is set in a fantastic realm. That's good use of CGI. But even too much of a good thing is a bad thing. It's tiring to watch.

no, people are exhausted with computer effects, neither lead is a draw, dunkirk, a source material everyone is unfamiliar with, and it's the wrong kind of science fiction...the weird kind people struggle to relate to.

personally both of their faces are upsetting.

I'm convinced that if Avatar had debuted with the past 4 years, it would also flop. 3d was so new in 2011, that people watched despite the paper thin plot and terrible leads.

Val just had too much working against it. 3D is so common place people don't mind skipping out on a movie even if the reviews say great 3d. Terrible actors emo green goblin and enchantress. No idea what the plot was, and saying based on a critically acclaimed graphic novel that only the French knew about.
