Is the being naked part of "naked and afraid" the stupidest conceit on the tube?

Yes. I'm ashamed to say I've watched an episode or two of this show.

The being naked part of the show really has next to no relevance to the show at all. (The only thing that ever comes into play are foot injuries/diseases for which they could have just done a "shoe-less and afraid")

I guess it's just a hook to catch attention and set them apart from all the other "survival reality" shows. But apart from that it really makes little sense.

You kinda answered your own question. If it was just 2 people trying to survive for 21 days it wouldn't be very interesting. I mean it's still not very interesting but at least it has a gimmick.

It forces them to have to deal with the elements more. Sunburn can cause some real problems, some of those places get cold at night.

Are you crazy? It's hugely relevant. Watch more episodes. Fighting the elements without shoes or clothing makes it much, much tougher. Trying to stay warm? Dry? Protecting yourself from the insane amount of bugs and bites? It makes the challenge much more difficult.

Have to admit, it is pretty relevant. Exposure to the elements, bugs, and lack of footwear are 3 of the toughest things they have to overcome.

Gonna assume you're serious.

Protection wise there is not all that much difference between them being totally naked in this show and other survival shows where they go around wearing bikinis or shorts. (Except for the shoes as I said above). Heck, even on this show I've seen them use things like the bags/satchels they give them as protective coverings.

To me it just seems like it's more for titillation. Which doesn't make much sense because they are shown on broadcast tv I think and don't show actual nudity except for the butts.

Except for the fact that they are eaten from head to toes by bugs. Also gave a lot of sun exposure

You obviously don't watch the show. Bug bites inside of vagina, leeches on scrotum, yeah, that happens when you're clothed. And sun exposure. And cold. Not to mention not being able to use clothing for things such as cordage.

This isn't rocket science. Clothing is an extra layer of protection from every single exposure. Not having clothes is a major disadvantage. And you think it's not relevant?

The basis of the show is primative survival. They are given a rating for this. No clothing is about as primative as you can get. That's the idea.

Put it this way: I'd rather have pants if lost in the jungle.

If you're from south LA, go outside in your draws at night and sit in your backyard for 30 minutes and let me know how you think it would be to have to spend the night outside like that.
Then think about anytime you ever walked through brush/woods with a machete clearing a path and recall the amount of thorny shite that gets stuck to your jeans and/or thick shirt you are wearing most likely.

Not to mention getting sunburned.

There's a reason everytime you saw Survivorman go anywhere, he always had long pants and long shirt, even if it was 90 degrees.

I think its very relevant for pretty much the same reasons as other people stated above. It adds a whole other aspect that makes surviving that much harder.

are you serious? wow.. of course being naked is a HUGE factor in the show. Open to the elemnets, the bugs, the wind, the rain, the sun. And imagine being a woman on your period out there naked... the bugs

as has been said
sunburn
foot problems
cold
bugs
discomfort lying down on poor surfaces
general discomfort just having everything exposed
mental stress when we are not used to being that way

It's not the least bit titillating, so no.

I've watch many episodes now and you couldn't be more wrong. The show has two major things.. Surviving the elements without any ounce of protection, and getting a long with your partner. They always pick a partner who is opposite as your personality. This makes it hard to cope when the man thinks the woman should stay around the shelter and prepare food, and the woman wants to go hunting and such.

So, picture this. You have a leech on your dick, bug bites all over the place. Starts raining, freezing cold rain. Shelter isn't allowing your Fire to stay going, and you are running out of dry firewood... To top it off, your partner is a Whinny hippie chick who is vegetarian and won't take a life of something for food.

And it's only day 6 of 21.

IT is for the first minute of the show, when you get to see what kind of arse the girls got.
after that, you forget the sexual part of the nudity and watch the show for what it is, team survival.

Naked and Afraid is okay.

I'm a bigger fan of "No Pants Island" myself.
