The third is still not a good movie, and it isn't just Sophia that's the problem.
Yeah, she really is. Many of the critics at the time of its release gave the film 3/4 star or 3.5/4 star reviews, most of them citing Sophia Coppola as the reason the scores weren't higher.
The third film is still really good and I enjoy watching it.

Somewhere towards the bottom.
Rises just shite on that entire trilogy.
The Dark Knight Rises was one of the more critically acclaimed films of 2012. Does it hold up as well as Batman Begins and The Dark Knight? Probably not. But it's still very entertaining and a very good ending to a very good trilogy.

Alien 3 should've continued the Colonial Marines vs Alien story of one of the most badass movies of all time.

I love Alien3. Alien is still the best of the trilogy, but I just love how openly antagonistic to the audience Alien3 is. The rules have been pretty well established at this point, so they plop Ripley down on a planet with no weapons and no means of escape, after killing off two beloved characters from the previous film in the opening credits. It is perhaps the only truly nihilistic mainstream Hollywood blockbuster ever made. At no point in the film do you have any hope that anyone is going to survive. It is two hours of utter hopelessness, and just slow death.
That's amazingly ballsy.
I think Aliens, while a really fun movie is the worst of the trilogy. At the end of the day, it's just an action film, with Ripley becoming Rambo. I enjoy it, and I like saying "Game Over!" as much as the next guy, but there's really not much to the movie. It's a shoot-em-up video game. Alien3, by contrast, has heft. It's purposefully alienatiing, and it is a perfect end to the trilogy: Everyone Dies. (Well, not everyone, but close to it)
After all, it is the perfect killing machine.

Aliens is one of my top 5 favorite movies of all time.
I truly believe this statement coming from a janitor, because no reputable film enthusiast/critic would have Aliens as even the best movie in the series.

Alien 3 sucked balls. It was such a slog, and the beginning was basically just a big frick you to everything that happened in the previous movie. The ending sucked dick too.

I think Alien 3 is a very underrated movie. I loved it.

I love Aliens so much, it's in the pantheon of sequels...as the greatest.
1. Godfather II (better than I)
2. Empire Strikes Back (better than all other "episodes")
3. Aliens (it's so wonderfully 80's - they took a late 1970's Sci-fi and turned it into a Vietnam movie.)

Aliens is good. But not best.

Alien 3 was an ok film. But, it suffers from the egg plot hole at the beginning and having a cast of mostly bald convicts that you can't tell one from another most of the film and you don't care if they die.

The third [Godfather] is still not a good movie

Well said.
I think that is a strength of the trilogy. While being interconnected you get three distinct stories. Three distinct evolutions of the character.
It's good stuff and Alien 3 is a great film. It's unexpected.
Few trilogies have that. (And of course we are ignoring Aliens 4 and Aliens -1, but yeah)
BttF has a very good interconnected feel though. In terms of building from one story to the next it is close to Star Wars.

Bourne is another that does this

batman begins is awesome until the final act where it is much more pedestrian...rises for all of its faults and nitpicks is much better.
TDK, which is the best easily, had more plot holes and nitpicks, but the editing and pacing is so spot the frick on you don't have time to think about it...

Easily Top 10, probably Top 5
This.
And frick people saying that Alien 3 sucked. I swear that is one of the most underrated movies in film history.

it may be, but it isn't even in the same stratosphere as the first two.
and I felt like it took a step back and was just a different version of the first one, while the first 2 are quite distinct.
also, I said it "might suck" I waver on this one...it's meh, but it's definitely a step down.
The second one was a different genre altogether and brought a lot of new stuff to the table (more aliens, how they reproduce, etc.) alien 3 is just disappointing...especially since it is unclear how a facehugger was onboard, etc.
different strokes. If you want more of the same, then it was alright. If you wanted something new and different or something added, then it bordered on sucking

I disagree, but what you say makes sense though. To be honest, I've always thought Aliens was pretty vastly overrated. I like it and it's good, but a lot of people have it as their favorite, and I just don't see how. For me, 2 and 3 are near each other, and the first one is just in a class all its own. And you're right about 2 being a completely different genre basically. But to counter my argument, 2 does have Bill Paxton, and we all know how much greatness that was.
Every Paxton line in Aliens.

This. I really don't understand anyone who likes 2 more than 1. Makes no sense to me. Aliens is a straight up action movie and there are better action films. It's good no doubt, and probably great, but Alien is a complete different film and is among the best in its genre/style. Aliens, just solid production values and directing.

I've always wondered what Nic Cage could have done in that role. Especially after Bad Lieutenant 2.

bill Paxton being terrible in a supporting role can't derail a good movie...tombstone for instance. It's almost part of the charm.
I think aliens is better because of the added layers. Granted I watch the extended edition (over and over and over and over)
but I love ripley's position...she's faced with panic and fear and decides to meet it head on. I can't believe they cut the scene where you find that her daughter has died of old age...it makes the bond between newt and ripley more enjoyable and comprehensible while establishing that ripley is out of her time (which is hard to pick up on because we're so far out of ours)
you have 3 elements
ripley
military
corporate
everyone is working from a different angle, and by all rights the marines have the power to beat these things but they go in not knowing how they operate and with a false sense of confidence (sound familiar?)
the alien(s) look better and the film has a lot more subtext.
It's the superior movie. Not to say that I don't love the first one. I do.
