It truly is the most diverse high school ever.

But a straight white male is the lead actor so it doesn't fit with the SJW agenda

There are 17 kids who have recurring roles:
Hannah, Clay, Justin, Jessica, Courtney, Marcus, Jeff, Bryce, Tyler, Sheri, Zach, Alex, Tony, Ryan, Skye, Brad, and Montgomery. Four of them being gay means 25% are gay. Again it doesn't bother me, but if you are looking for evidence of it pushing a PC agenda that's a higher than average percentage.

Not quite true. 4/25 is 16%, where most studies would show only about 2.5% of the population is LGBT.

I don't care if the actual figure (which is much higher than 2.5% ) is 0.5%, 4/25 falls well within the realm of statistical possibility.

But sure, be more triggered.

I only count 2 of 17 who are gay: Courtney and Tony. Ryan reads as gay, but I don't think it's ever confirmed (Alex reads as gay as well, but he's confirmed as straight). Who's the fourth?

The show is clearly anti-bullying, so it has an agenda, but it's also run afoul of the left, and it's basically Nice Guy porn: that girl who rejects you actually does want you. Anything that starts running afoul of both political extremes is usually doing something right.

Completely unrelated, but it is now clear you have never taken a statistics class, and have never studied standard deviations.

Courtney, Tony, Ryan (confirms it when he's talking to Hannah and calls himself a "f****t" and says only they can use that term and him and Tony used to date), and Tony's boyfriend Brad.

I didn't mean to derail this thread. I don't think it's PC at all, but could clearly see how that can be seen, but they do some very non-PC things, like circling the wagon of a serial rapists and bullying kids who are not popular.

I think you are right that what made it good was that it didn't push a political message but focused on a social message that bullying is wrong and mental health, especially for teenagers, needs more attention.

One of them is flamboyount and open.. another is clearly in the closet, another's gayness is used to show how oblivious clay is to his surrounding.. the other is an afterthought with one line used to show the fear of the one in the closet.. I was counting the lesbo at the school but there is also Tony's boyfriend

While the numbers are scewed when compared to normal society it's worth noting that they are used within the story to show different aspects of teenage life..

They did push bullying in schools, but that's the entire premise of the show.

Part of my job is helping deal with behavior incidents in a HS that's one of the better ones in the state. And about half of what I see is bullying. Especially cyber bullying. The shite I've seen teenagers say about each other and on social media where once it's out there, it's out there, would make the OT blush.

I overheard the episodes a bit from when my teenager daughter was watching.

What little bit I did hear made me never want to watch it.

Not their demographic, that's for sure.

I agree with the derail, haha. And hopefully this can help someone.

More importantly, it should be a wake up call to parents. How many times did Clay simply say, Oh gotta get to school, or oops it's bedtime etc. to get out of having a meaningful conversation with his parents?

Parents need to be more active in their children's lives.

Totally missed that line. Thanks. And I forgot Brad existed. He's a nothing character.

And while its always good for parents to be active in their kids lives, I'd posit that Hannah's parents ARE involved and they do shower her with love. they are rightfully furious with her over the money, but they forgive her quickly. They do try to be involved in her life, and they still miss it.

Your description just makes it sound like everyday life in America in 2017....unfortunately.

Not sure you can make a statement by portraying normal life.

The actual percent age of the population that identifies as LGBT is 3.5%. Higher than 2.5, but not 'much higher'

Yet in a northern california high school, it's probably more.

I have a really tough time getting fired up about the number of gay people represented in a particular show. Where is the rule that says they demographics on television have to match the actual demographics of this country?

The school is probably huge and gay people usually hang out in the same circles as well, so you if you see one, you will probably see most of them in the high school hanging out with the same people.

I didn't think it was particularly PC. I mean it ended up being that the person who did the worst thing was the black counselor. And anything PC paints black people as perfect beings that can do nothing wrong

I would love see another "teenage drama" with as many brutal and real scenes that this show had

It's an adult series about high school kids and is no way a teenage drama

What about the interracial couples? 20 years ago I don't know any interracial couples in high school. Is it that prevalent now?
