A friend of mine cannot STAND this movie. He watched it on a regular TV. He just thinks it absolutely sucks. I can't help but think he's trolling me because I enjoyed it so much, but he's dead serious. It drives me up the freaking wall. I know I shouldn't let it bother me so much, but I just can't comprehend it

Finally I would not have cast Matt Damon for the role of Dr. Mann. You needed someone older and more intimidating and inspiring for me to buy that role. I'd go with either Bryan Cranston, Terry O'Quinn, or Ben Kingsley.

In the IMAX is where Nolan wanted people to see the movie.

Want and can are two different things. shite happens and sometimes people can't see it in an IMAX. To discount someone's opinion because they didn't see it in an IMAX is asinine.

I enjoyed the movie a lot, and I've only seen it on my non-IMAX 42" tv and coke can speakers.

If they are sending MM back through the wormhole to hook up with Anne Hathaway, why hadn't they gone through already?

Because Hathaway's time distortion was the same as Cooper's. She just made it to Edward's planet and sent out the signal it was hospitable at the end of the movie.

Gravity

Gravity is the total opposite IMO of Interstellar. I hated Gravity. The storytelling was terrible, I thought.

Seeing Interstellar iN anything other than an IMAX is obviously fine, people can do as they please, however, I think people who do are doing that are doing themselves a big disservice. I only say that people who didn't like the film and didn't see it in an IMAX setting shouldn't be critical of something that wasn't experienced in its intended setting.

Like I said in the OP, I love the movie and everything about it. Obviously the ending is WAY out there, but it went out on a limb and everything about it IMO worked.

Watched it twice in IMAX. I just watched it on Bluray and felt that it wasn't nearly as much fun at home even though I'm a big fan of the movie. I guess IMAX turned it more into an experience instead of just watching another movie. I would still recommend it to just about anybody that has a sliver of geek in them

i saw it in a regular theater when i was out of work traveling opening night. it helped me put together the plot and comprehend what was happening.

then i went with friends a few days later to see it in IMAX and didn't have to worry about the plot, just soaked it all in. much much better experience.

the score was too loud, but i felt that added to the immersion. but... the it was effing perfect in every way. docking and ending scene scores were two of the most perfect i've ever heard.

And because of them skipping across the black hole, the people on Earth had already solved the gravity equation and built the ships. They got the signal and headed to the wormhole location to find MM floating in space.

Frame of reference.

Any movie that makes me ponder existence like that is good in my book.

I have a hard time even lingering on thoughts about the father-daughter dynamic.

"wow" is basically what I thought and said throughout the movie

The score was WAY too loud IMO, but I think I read somewhere (maybe even an article linked on this board) that Nolan did that intentionally at times during the movie. But certain scenes (like the docking scene) were so loud that it was actually distracting for me and almost hurt my ears.

That being said, the score was great though. I just wish the volume had been turned down a bit. And for reference, I saw it at the IMAX in Baton Rouge (which isn't really a true IMAX, but it's still pretty awesome).

I still resent my wife for making me see mocking jay instead of interstellar because interstellar was too long

I've since seen it at home and loved it, but still pissed I missed out on a better experience

I loved it. I could definitely see the 2001 influence. It was a mind expanding movie for the 21st Century. Explored some scientific themes that I find fascinating.

Wife and I saw it in IMAX and we both loved it. We saw Gravity a few months earlier in 3d and thought "wow this is the closest we'll get to see space". Then we saw Interstellar and was wowed. I don't get all the nit picking, it's a movie for entertainment. Sure, there were some things that made me go "uhh" but overall I thoroughly enjoyed that movie. As others have mentioned the only thing I really don't like about some movies these days is the muffled dialogue or dialogue covered by sounds.

Incredible movie. Love people that critique it that never saw it in IMAX.

Late to the party... I finally watch it last night. I absolutely loved this movie. Some quick comments on this thread and then my own comments...

-- Clear parallel to the beautiful yet empty Gravity. There were no real stakes in that movie (I didn't care if she died). The emotional core is what makes the visuals work. There are stakes.

-- Totally agree on the score and the mixing. Beautiful music, one of the very best I've heard. Terrible sound mix. Biggest flaw of the movie.

-- Similarly structured to 2001. It's essentially a three-act play. I'll be honest, I loved Act Three. The multiverse of her bedroom was incredibly touching to me, even if a bit over-explained. As a parent, I really connected to that storyline, and I liked how humanity saves itself not by thinking globally, but thinking micro. He loves his daughter and wants to return. That is his motivator.

-- No mention of the robots? Much needed comic relief, but not overdone. You actually feel for CASE when they shoot him through the black hole. He's a person by this point.

-- I read some reviews which complained about the fifth dimension being love. I think that misinterprets the film. Gravity and time were the 4th and 5th dimensions, but it was love that made us human. That was our primary instinct, and the thing that drives us. Anyone who doesn't believe that love, particularly parental love, cannot drive a person like that has not lived enough. I just feel bad for someone who has missed that part of their life so far.

And this gets to a big key for the film for me: balancing love and fear. Dr. Mann argues fear is what makes us human, but even his argument hinges on our response to live. You see your children before your die, and you fear losing them. You fear the absence of love.

Brand, OTOH, argues that love will guide them to the correct planet. Now, it turns out she's right, but even if she wasn't, it's simply important because love is the thing that drives her and makes this all possible. Same with Cooper. He has to get home to see his child to fulfill a promise.

Fear is not the opposite of love, cynicism is. And as I've gotten older, I've grown weary of the cynical viewpoint in film and music, which essentially gives permission to people not to try because it doesn't matter anyway. Cynicism leads to apathy. Skepticism is good and healthy, so long as it spurs action, but it becomes destructive when it becomes a way to justify your refusal to honestly engage things. It's why I have such contempt for ironic detachment. It's a coward's way out.

Interstellar comes down firmly on the side of love, but also of dreaming in order to take action. Merely surviving in the dirt is not enough, we have to reach for the stars to truly be human, and become our better selves. Yes, this risks failure. That is what makes the accomplishment greater. Interstellar doesn't just dream of a new future of exploration, but gives us the reason to go do it.

I found the movie profoundly moving.
