Independence Day: Why was Russell Casse still a social pariah?

When the aliens arrived, you would think that they wouldn't still treat him as a social pariah for claiming that he was abducted by aliens.
They should've at least eased up on him.
Aliens arriving is kinda proof that at least the alien part was correct.

"they" did ease up. The locals that made fun of his story before, went on tv retelling his story as if true after the arrival.

100% percent agree. The fricking military guys are literally trying to find pilots to attack the alien spaceship yet they still roll their eyes when Case says he got abducted.

This bothers me as well. You'd figure irrefutable evidence of alien activity would make him a source of information on an enemy which little is known about. Instead they mock him about an encounter with hostile aliens.

The lesson we should take from this is that while all the real pilots got shot down the drunk guy saved the fricking planet. I say drink up.

Hundreds, if not thousands, of people have claimed to have been abducted by aliens. The mere existence of aliens didn't prove that this particular person was abducted, any more than the mere existence of the CIA proves that a given paranoid schizophrenic is correct about them spying on him.
Russell was a drunk and drama queen. Had, say, a respected town doctor made the same claim, perhaps he would have been treated differently.
