Now that's what I call a close-but-no-cigar encounter!

Welcome to... Meh.

It ain't over till the fat lady... Wait. Where did she go?

I think I know how folks felt leaving The Force Awakens, who claimed it was too derivative of ANH. It was okay, I guess, but it seemed to me like they were too cutesy with the execution. I like Liam Hemsworth, but he was far too yuk-yuk for my taste. I would have preferred that he be a stone cold badass.

Effects were great, but I see why more and more directors are going back to practical effects when they can.

I can pretty safely say that Roland Emmerich isn't this type of director.

Talking about a movie being to cutest, I feel like this was a review a grandmother would write. Yuk-yuk????

King of the moronic blockbuster. I usually pass, but I'm excited for this idiocy. I'll probably catch it Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning.

To be honest, I kind of am as well. Apparently its the best film he's made of the century. I'm sure it can be a guilty pleasure. The rest of his garbage though, holy shite. He's clearly made some of the worst films of the generation.

Check it out, then get back to me. I love a good summer blockbuster, especially ID4 but this one just rang hollow to me. Hemsworth acts like a birthday clown in a flight suit throughout the majority of his scenes. By the time the credits rolled, it seemed like they were overtly playing the Lost in Space/Starship Troopers card in tone.

I'm not afraid to be on the "wrong" side of popular opinion - I may very well be in the minority. God knows I was when it came to It Follows and The Witch.

I ain't complaining about your opinion. Just thought your review was very "punny". Like something an enthusiastic grandmother would write on her Yelp review

I don't need a review to tell me this movie is garbage. Not gonna waste money on this.

It was one of the worst summer blockbusters Ive ever seen. The first one had characters you liked...Will Smith, a well written Jeff Goldbloom, a well written Bill Pullman, and other side characters. This one had no character that I wanted to see on screen more than 5 seconds. The second rate Hemsworth was plain awful. The guy playing Smith's son was awful, and the writers totally made Goldbloom and Pullman's characters cringeworthy.

But what does that mean? Is White House Down or 2012 the high water mark?

This is false. He did do The Patriot in 2000. Easily his best film. Then there is Anonymous, which was actually a pretty descent movie.

I loved the first movie for what it was and have been excited about the sequel. My fear is that the first one had "charm" in that it took place in our "reality" and the sequel obviously takes place in a different one. You could relate to the first movie but not so much this one.

Am I wrong in that as long as there are lots of explosions and alien bullshite going on, some throwback jokes/scenes, some decently annoying Goldblum and some decently awesome Pullman, with some corny one-liners thrown in, I'm gonna enjoy this one? Or at the very least, not hate it?

I mean, "mindless summer blockbuster" should literally be the perfect description for a movie like this. Sure, it won't be as good as ID4, but sequels rarely are ever as good as their originals. This should be right up the alley of "shut your mind down for a couple of hours and go watch aliens (and eventually, us) wreck some shite," right?

You would think. You would hope, but you would likely be wrong.

Slightly related sidebar: When is Hollywood going to learn that less is more, when it comes to trailers? Many of what could have been pretty intense scenes or reveals were telegraphed in the trailers. That pisses me off when studios do that.

Hmmm. Well that's disheartening. I still want to see it, but now I am lowering my (already low) expectations even further.
