I just finished my first Generation Kill rewatch in a few years.

Incredible series. I think it's better than Band of Brothers by a decent margin. Bring on the hate.

Pro tip: watch it wearing headphones. There is so much hilarious background dialogue you miss otherwise.

I wasn't in the military so I wouldn't know, so I wonder if the show accurately portrayed the incompetence of a lot of the officers.

I haven't seen it in a long time, but I remember the guy they called "Captain America" as being seriously inept.
Way back when, I saw Platoon with a bunch of friends. One was a 1LT in the infantry. In the big battle at the end of the movie, the LT platoon commander is fricking up and panicking. He has his helmet on backwards. My Army friend was PISSED. "Hollywood always makes junior officers look retarded! Etc, etc. He was pretty offended.
I'm sure there are incompetent officers, but I'd like to think they are in the minority.

Exactly. I think the laugh out loud humor is one of the best parts of the show.
