My wife's and some of her friends at work been on a Petticoat Junction watching thing so I watched a few with her on YouTube.

On scrolling through the episodes listed I was like damn, how may episodes did this show have in a season. I think it was 36 or so episodes the first season. I checked a couple of other 60's sitcoms and they also had 35 or more episodes per season.

I guess they went quantity over quality back then.

In the '50s it was 39 a season -- no reruns. The 13 week summer season was given over to replacement shows, basically auditioning for a spot on the regular network lineup.

However by the '60s the popularity of syndicated reruns such as I Love Lucy convinced networks they could schedule reruns themselves. So production levels began to decrease: from the mid 30s in the mid '60s to around 26 for All In The Family in the '70s.

The quality to quantity ratio was much better back then, when you only had three networks instead of hundreds of cable networks.

Back then, most series would start in late September and go all the way into June with all new episodes. That's when the Summer replacement shows kicked in. Johnny Cash, The Saint, Hee Haw, Glen Campbell... those all started out as Summer replacement shows because the networks would pull certain shows instead of rerunning the entire season.
