Because of his military training he was a dangerous weapon and was sent to a federal penitentiary? The dude was clearly acting in self-defense.

It helps if you mentally retcon a throwaway line showing the judge was the deceased's uncle or something.

Two people involved in the fight were known patrons of the establishment, Cameron's wife witnessed the whole thing, and Cameron would have had some bruising from the 3v1 he initially took. Plus Cameron probably would have passed a blood alcohol test and drug test.
