I'm embarrassed to say that I've never seen any of the Godfather movies. Seen bits and pieces. When the wife and kid head back to school, me and the dog will make it a priority. I always tell myself I'm going to take the time to watch all 3 together, and I think that is what held me back.

They are flat out incredible films. Just masterpieces (1 and 2 anyway).

Agreed. I love The Godfather, but I've always thought Brando's portrayal of Vito Corleone was one of the more overrated performances of all time, especially when silhouetted against Pacino's Michael.

I would definitely watch the first 2 - then take a break, like 60 or 70 years before you watch 3.

I wouldn't call it overrated at all. I just don't see him the main character of the film those should have been up for best supporting actor.
My favorite scene in the Serious is when Michael tells sonny, tom and company that he will kill the cop and the pusher. The Camera is center on him as Tom and Sonny argue so you are not quite focuses on Pacino. As Pacino starts to say his plan it slowly zooms in on him "find a way to get a gun in there and I will kill them both.

The film has some of the best acting, top to bottom, ever. One of the reasons it is so highly regarded.
I mean, mafia stories tend to get silly - and Godfather is not exception - the problem is the larger than life characters are based on real people who were, themselves, larger than life and somewhat silly, out of context.
Anytime a filmed version nails the environment in a meaningful way - without drifting into parody or satire, that product is going to have staying power. These films (minus 3), Scorcese's Goodfellas and Casino, and The Sopranos are the top tier examples of this.

I had never seen them before. All three came on a movie channel and I recorded them. I watched the 1st one and I watched it again. I can't believe I waited so long to watch that movie. I have watched the second one, but I have not watched the 3rd one yet.
I wouldn't watch all three in one sitting.

I agree Pesci's had some self-awareness that was off-putting, but at the end of the day, he's asked to play these composite characters, based on real folks and he has to make some choices at the end of the day.
Stone - on the other hand - I tend to rate her performance fairly high. Having seen my fair share of women folks "freaking the frick out" - her key scenes are convincing, believeable and true to the source material.
I believe that people familiar with the Rosenthals gave Stone high marks on her portrayal and that's good enough for me.
If anything, Deniro came off as a little wooden, but my best guess was this was based on research (Deniro still cared at that point in his career - although that was at the tail end of that).
On the other hand, the voice-over narratives by Denrio and Pesci were good storytelling tools, but not nearly as good as Liotta's in Goodfellas - true story - Liotta made the recording engineer sit across the table from him, so he would be telling the story to someone, rather than just read it dryly into a microphone - I think that worked out well.

I have so many friends my age that had never seen it and I just cannot fathom that. Its like Star wars and Indiana Jones to me, at some point your parents need to sit you down and make you watch it.
